Job Summary
Job Title: Controller Oil & Gas
Reports to: CFO
Location: Houston
Employment Type: Full-Time
Client Profile: Mid-sized upstream oil & gas company
About the Role
Our client is a privately held growth-oriented operator in the upstream oil & gas sector. As their staffing partner we are seeking a strategic and hands-on Controller to lead core accounting functions enhance financial transparency and support executive decision-making. This role is ideal for candidates who thrive in lean environments bring rigor to financial controls and can translate operational complexity into actionable financial insights.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all accounting operations including general ledger accounts payable/receivable payroll and revenue recognition
- Oversee monthly quarterly and annual close processes with accuracy and timeliness
- Maintain and enhance internal controls compliance protocols and audit readiness (GAAP SOX-lite if applicable)
- Collaborate with the CFO and executive team on budgeting forecasting and strategic financial planning
- Supervise and mentor a small accounting team; optimize workflows and reporting tools
- Coordinate with external auditors tax advisors and financial institutions
- Implement or refine ERP systems (e.g. NetSuite Sage or industry-specific platforms)
- Support M&A due diligence asset-level reporting and joint venture accounting as needed
Candidate Profile
- Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance or related field; CPA strongly preferred
- Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting experience ideally within oil & gas
- Strong understanding of upstream accounting practices (e.g. DD&A LOE revenue allocation)
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams and scale processes in mid-market environments
- Proficiency in ERP systems and advanced Excel; experience with Power BI or similar tools is a plus
- High integrity analytical rigor and executive presence
Preferred Experience
- Exposure to private equity-backed or family-owned business structures
- Familiarity with land lease and production accounting workflows
- Ability to model cash flow scenarios and support capital planning
