Job Summary and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager Family Birth Center the Perinatal Safety Specialist is responsible for the implementation promotion support and oversight of perinatal patient safety and quality of care initiatives and programs. This specialized nursing role combines clinical expertise with a focus on patient safety to provide high-quality care and support to pregnant women and their families adhering to departmental institutional regional and Federal clinical and ethical standards. The perinatal safety nurse will participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance perinatal care processes and outcomes contributing to a culture of safety within the healthcare facility. The primary responsibility of the perinatal patient safety nurse is to promote safe care for mothers and babies by keeping patient safety as a focus of all unit operations and clinical practices.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current California RN license
  • Minimum Five (5) years as a clinician in Womens Services
  • Two (2) years project experience in Women and Infants Perinatal Safety
  • Experience with quality improvement/process improvement techniques project/program management
  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing
  • Basic Life Support certification (BLS) from an AHA affiliated program
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification (can obtain within first 90 days)

AND at least one of the following nursing certifications

  • Critical Care Registered Nurse Neonatal (CCRN-NEO)
  • Maternal Child Nursing (MCN)
  • Perinatal Nurse (PERI)
  • Low Risk Neonatal Nursing (RNC-LRN)
  • Maternal Newborn Nursing (RNC-MNN)
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing (RNC-NIC)
  • Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB)
  • Obstetric Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing (RNC)
  • OB-NEO Quality Safety

Other Knowledge Experience and Skills Required:

Experienced in medical record review.

Demonstrated ability to utilize rapid cycle Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) and/or other appropriate improvement models in facilitating

Experience with performance improvement (PI) teams/projects.

Possess excellent Interpersonal and communication skills with excellent written and formal presentation skills

Possess critical thinking skills

Current knowledge regarding the standard of care practice standards regulatory requirements and hospital policies/procedures pertaining to perinatal/neonatal patient care.
