Job Summary

Equipment Operator - Asphalt

Team Elmers seeks to fill a full-time seasonal opening for an Equipment Operator. This position will operate several pieces of equipment including but not limited to: Roller Screed and/or Paver.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Roller Operator - Requires the operation of self-propelled steel-wheeled rubber-tired vibrator segmented or other type roller to compact earth subgrade sub-base and asphalt surfaces in the construction of highways streets and runways. The job requirements are to distribute break down compress and give a finished surface to cooling asphalt. The first stage breaks down the asphalt mix with the breakdown roller. The second stage compresses it with a rubber-tired roller and the final finish is given by the finish roller. Roller operators may also be required to compact earth fills sub-grades and flexible base.

  • Drives machine in successive overlapping passes over surfaces to be compacted rolling sub-grade and asphalt to.
  • Determines speed and direction of machine based on knowledge of compressibility of material under changing temperatures.
  • Pushes hand roller and pounds surfaces using hand tamp or guides portable power roller over areas not accessible to road roller.

Screed - Operator - Operate the controls on the free-floating screed which is attached to the paver vehicle to control the quantity and consistency of asphalt that is deposited; estimating overall quantity for the project as well as the quantity needed to achieve the correct grade in the finished surface.

  • Operates valves to regulate flow of material at a specified rate.
  • Signals asphalt paving machine operator to start and stop paving machine.
  • Observes distribution of material over road surfaces to ensure uniform distribution.
  • Turns hand-wheels to set angle and depth of screed.
  • Using depth gauge verifies depth specifications of compacted asphalt.

Paver Operator - Operate paving machines that spread and level hot mix asphalt paving material on subgrade of highways and streets with the aid of stakes and level gauges to ensure mix is placed at the proper grade and thickness.

  • Preheat paving screed before placement of asphalt.
  • Control paving machine to dump truck and maintain constant flow of asphalt into hopper.
  • Observe distribution of paving material along screed and control direction of screed to eliminate voids at curbs and joints.
  • Attach extensions to screed to adjust width.
  • Keep paver maintenance.
  • Maintain CDL license to haul paver from job to job.

Mill Operator - Operate milling machine to remove and grind road surfaces

  • Ability to load the mill.
  • Able to run mill for specified time.
  • Obtain required fineness.

Qualifications:

  • Valid license CDL A or B preferred if do not have must be able to obtain within 1 year of hire
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
  • Clean driving record for past 5 years
  • Ability to pass pre-employment physical and drug screen
  • Mechanical -- Knowledge of equipment machines and tools including their designs uses repair and maintenance.
  • Building and Construction-- Knowledge of materials methods and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses buildings or other structures such as highways and roads.
  • Experience as a prep crew laborer or comparable experience is preferred.
  • Ability to complete tasks on asphalt crew as needed such as handling power tools running heavy equipment raking shoveling.
  • Ability and willingness to learn and understand your role on the team.
  • Ability to work long hours and perform repetitive lifting carrying climbing and walking. Repetitive lifting could be 40 or more pounds at any one time.
  • Ability to work long hours and 5-6 days a week in all environmental conditions.
  • Good work ethic punctuality and alertness.
  • Ability to follow all company DOT OSHA and MiOSHA safety rules.
