A Brief Overview

Functions as an extension of the clinic and/or to facilitate services for patients in cooperation with the health care team. The Coordinator must be competent in the surgical technologist skills of the surgical specialty. Assists the physician both in the clinic setting and in the Operating Room with procedures and patient care as needed. Performs decontamination and sterilization procedures according to Infection Control and QA guidelines. Provides the physician and the nurse with products safe for patient use on a routine basis or as emergency needs demand.

What you will do

  • Prepares the operating room for surgical procedures in a timely fashion. This may include organizing equipment and needed instruments setting up quickly and accurately for emergency cases assuring proper and adequate equipment for all cases.
  • Assists the surgeon as the first or second scrub person during surgical procedures. Maintains a sterile field at all times in the procedure area. Maintains efficiency in handling surgical instruments at physicians request. Verifies specimens with surgeons and nurses.
  • Receives and verifies correct supplies and equipment are available for all surgical procedures.
  • Rooms patients in the clinic setting to include taking vitals documenting chief complaint or injury and verifying patient information. Assists in the clinic within office procedures and sterilization needs.
  • Assists patients with needs involving questions and paperwork rooming and getting patients prepared to see the provider.
  • Performs decontamination assembly and sterilization according to Infection Control and established QA monitoring guidelines as demonstrated by annual competency review.
  • Operates sterilization equipment which includes: steam medivators drying cabinets and hydrogen peroxide sterilizers ultrasonic cleaner washer/sterilizer and automated cart washer. Operates equipment according to manufacturer operational directions and in a manner that ensures the safety or the operator as demonstrated by annual competency review.
  • Reports broken and malfunctioning instruments and equipment to the leader. Monitors equipment and patient care to assure all seamlessly move the patient through the Perioperative continuum.
  • Works closely with surgeons anesthesia personnel vendors nursing staff and other hospital and clinic departments to progress the scheduled cases and accommodate any add-on procedures.
  • Acts as a role model and leader for members of their surgical specialty team and assumes additional leadership responsibilities as deemed appropriate. Participates in yearly inventory counts maintains up-to-date preference cards for specialty area.

Required Education License/Certification or Work Experience:

  • Technical Certificate completion of an accredited Surgical Technician program

Preferred Education License/Certification or Work Experience:

  • Certified Surgical Tech (CST) - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Upon Hire
  • Surgical Tech First Assistant (CSFA) - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Upon Hire
  • Less than 1 year previous experience as a Surgical Technician
