Reservoir Technologist In Situ Applications Approvals - Hybrid

The Opportunity

Are you ready to use your reservoir expertise to make a real impact on Albertas energy sector As a Reservoir Technologist on the In Situ Applications Approvals team youll play a key role in decisions that ensure the safe and environmentally responsible development of Albertas oil sands resources. Youll work directly with technical professional colleagues applicants and government to holistically review proposals articulate risks and make recommendations that ensure efficient and consistent decision making regarding orderly development of non-thermal oil sands production activities.

At the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) youll join a team that values collaboration continuous improvement and innovative problem-solving. Youll help shape regulatory decisions that align with provincial policy and AERs mandate.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Review coordinate and make timely equity and conservation-based recommendations using a risk informed review process for proposed primary and enhanced recovery (non-thermal) projects within designated oil sands areas. Draft approvals with site-specific conditions to mitigate impacts and ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements (e.g. Interim Directive ID 99-01: Gas/Bitumen Production in Oil Sands Areas Application Notification and Drilling Requirements Directive 065: Resources Applications for Oil and Gas Reservoirs) and legislation (e.g. Oil Sands Conservation Act Oil and Gas Conservation Act).

  • Act as a primary liaison with representatives from industry and AER staff during the application review process.

  • Perform technical reviews (desktop surveillance and occasional travel to sites) to ensure operational risks associated to development have been mitigated through the compliance and assurance mechanisms.

  • Support improvements to the regulatory process with recommendations based on learnings from surveillance and audit activities and implementing standardized risk assessment criteria in application reviews.

  • Support the statements of concern appeal and hearing processes including Alternative Dispute Resolution sessions.

What were looking for in you:

  • Engineering technology diploma with 3-5 years of related experience in regulatory and reservoir fields in the in situ or related energy sector.

  • Certification as technologist or technician with ASET or eligibility to be registered as such is a requirement.

  • Assets include a strong understanding of Albertas regulatory framework and associated legislation across the energy lifecycle and a basic understanding of fundamental reservoir engineering concepts and methods.

  • Highly motivated with the ability to work well independently as well as part of a team.

  • Beginner to intermediate awareness of project management principles demonstrating well-developed organizational and analytical skills the ability to meet deadlines and work independently and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
