Job Summary

Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Research Development Specialist is an integral member of the Center for Research and Creative Activity. This experienced professional level position will contribute to the development and implementation of the Division of Research and Economic Developments strategy priorities and goals to grow the Universitys research enterprise. This position is instrumental in advancing the research mission by providing expert project management and strategy on research development-related initiatives and proposal development efforts. The specialist collaborates with principal investigators research development staff sponsored programs administrators project teams and external partners through the coordination and development of large-scale multidisciplinary proposals to external sponsors and funding addition the specialist supports special projects that enhance research capacity streamline workflows and advance strategic priorities.

Level Scope:

Recognized subject matter expert who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field with limited oversight from managers. Independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; requires deep job knowledge of area typically obtained through higher education combined with experience. Manages large projects or processes and problems faced are difficult and often complex; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies processes and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Influences others regarding policies practices and procedures.

Essential Functions:

60% of Time Proposal Coordination and Development

  • Serve as point of contact for proposal coordination efforts managing communications with principal investigators and project teams.
  • Facilitate the preparation and submission of complex multidisciplinary and multi-institutional proposals.
  • Manage proposal development workflows timelines and deliverables to ensure successful completion.
  • Develop tools templates and resources to streamline the proposal process.
  • Assess alignment with sponsor guidelines solicitations and institutional policies.
  • Provide guidance on grantsmanship editorial positioning and proposal structure.
  • Edit and review drafts to improve clarity flow and persuasiveness.
  • Advise faculty on strategies to improve proposal competitiveness and sponsor alignment.

30% of Time Strategic Initiatives

  • Lead and/or support cross-functional Center for Research and Creative Activity initiatives that advance strategic priorities from concept through successful completion.
  • Develop project plans timelines and workstreams that drive strategic initiatives forward ensuring alignment and coordination across stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes workflows and team efficiencies applying analytical and critical thinking skills to evaluate potential solutions.
  • Mentor staff by providing instruction guidance and reference materials for project institution and agency-specific policies and procedures.
  • Content development and project management of education and training activities such as annual grant writing workshops job aids workshops panels networking events and research interest groups.
  • Assist coordinate and contribute with Center of Research and Creative Activity personnel on research development education and training processes and project management activities.

10% of Time Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge Skills Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of various project management methodologies (such as PMI agile/scrum).
  • Expertise in proposal development including adherence to sponsor guidelines and solicitation requirements.
  • Ability to provide strategic feedback on proposal competitiveness positioning and sponsor alignment.
  • Leadership and team management abilities with a talent for effectively communicating with and motivating interdisciplinary teams.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to make independent decisions in a complex environment.
  • Self-motivated proactive and capable of working independently and collaboratively.

MinimumQualifications:

Bachelors or Advanced Degree and 5 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of external funding agencies grant programs and proposal development processes.
  • Experience supporting proposal development coordination or grants administration.
  • Demonstrated success facilitating large-scale proposals or strategic initiatives within higher education or equivalent organizational settings.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary range is$68000 to $72000 annually and is commensurate with State University provides a best-in-classbenefits package including (but not limited to):
