The Department of Revenues Audit Division has a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Examiner within its Account Research & Desk Examination (ARDE) unit. As a lead on this team you will perform and resolve the full scope of the most complex financial examinations of business accounts tax returns audit reports and/or assessments to adjust taxpayer records in conformance with statutory requirements. You will also assist the division in achieving its annual revenue commitment to the legislature through account research examination field audit referrals and assessment for tax liability.

Duties

More of what you will do:

  • Perform pre-examination planning to include in-depth research into taxpayers business activities.
  • Contact selected taxpayers to determine tax liability.
  • Educate assist advise or issue instructions to taxpayers.
  • Acts as coach mentor and trainer for new examiners including answering questions reviewing work and providing guidance and skill development.
  • Serve as a technical resource over ARDEs core functions including Tax Discovery/Recovery and the Voluntary Disclosure Program.

Information Technology Proficiency:

  • Spreadsheet skills to use intermediate formulas tables filtering and sorting.
  • Document skills to compose messages. Using bolding white space bullets and other formatting to ensure the message is clear.
  • Ability to locate files and keep your electronic files organized.
  • Managing and responding to emails in a timely manner.


Research Analysis and Problem Solving

  • Ability to understand and solve problems by applying strong analytical skills to include collecting all the relevant information and data needed to reach a conclusion.
  • Ability to synthesize data into fundamental issues and manageable components identifying the logical outcomes from the analyses of the data collected.
  • Ability to research interpret and apply federal and state tax laws to determine correct tax reporting.
  • Knowledge of theory and practice of accounting and auditing; Washington Revenue Act of 1935 as amended; rules policies and procedures of the Department of Revenue; or general investigative techniques; unclaimed property laws probate laws governing escheats descent and distribution wills duties of personal representative and legislative process.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret accounts relative to varying types of businesses; obtain required information in a tactful manner; assign and review the work of subordinates.


Planning and Organization

  • Experience managing multiple assignments or projects simultaneously ensuring timely completion.
  • Ability to regularly evaluate progress on assignments and adjust organization priority time method etc. to meet deadlines.


Communication (Written and verbal)

  • Ability to convey complex information in laymans terms to generate understanding and reach agreement.
  • Ability to navigate challenging conversations and deliver unfavorable outcomes about tax implications to businesses and representatives in a professional manner.
  • Experience communicatingeffectively and professionally in both verbal and written form.
  • Experience composing written communication that effectively convey ideas or information to the intended reader.


Interpersonal Skills:

  • Working well individually and in groups.
  • Effectively able to translate complex technical concepts into understandable instructions.
  • Utilizing negotiation and persuasion skills to de-escalate and obtain buy in.

Decision making and applying independent judgment:

  • Making independent decisions based on training received.
  • Applying judgement to determine the most accurate action when multiple potential actions could be taken.
  • Showcasing comfortability in work environments when decisions are treated on a case-by-case basis.

  • Possess an openness toward changing ideas responsibilities strategies and processes.
  • Experience working with a high degree of autonomy and also participating collaboratively as part of a team.


Preference may be granted to candidates who possess the following:

  • One year as an Excise Tax Examiner 2 provided 6 semester (9 quarter) hours of accounting business law money and banking or finance coursework has been completed OR
  • Two years Department of Revenue experience at the journey level in accounting auditing compliance or tax administration provided 6 semester (9 quarter) hours of accounting business law money and banking or finance coursework has been completed OR
  • Six years of experience in accounting banking auditing tax compliance or tax administration provided candidate has experience working with the Departments mission critical systems OR
  • Bachelors degree involving major study in business or public administration or closely allied field with a minimum of 12 semester or 18 quarter hours of accounting and one year of accounting or auditing experience. Accounting or auditing experience may be substituted year for year for education provided the required accounting course work has been completed.
