Water Plant Operator II Department: Water Employment Status: Full-Time FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Reports To: Chief Operator Civil Service Status: Classified (Non-Competitive) About the Position The City of Wilmington is seeking a skilled and reliable Water Plant Operator II to join our team in ensuring the safe and efficient treatment of the communitys drinking water. This position plays a key role in operating and maintaining the Citys water treatment facility performing laboratory analysis monitoring system performance and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. This position is a classified non-competitive role as approved by the Civil Service Commission on September 16 2025 classifying Water Operator I II III positions for both hiring and promotion. Key Responsibilities - Operate and monitor water treatment plant systems and related equipment including pumps motors and feeders.
- Perform chemical treatment and laboratory analysis to ensure safe high-quality water.
- Monitor gauges dials and SCADA systems to regulate flow rates and chemical dosages.
- Conduct inspections of equipment and report maintenance needs.
- Maintain accurate operational records and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Serve as backup Operator of Record for the water plant and/or distribution system as needed.
- Participate in plant maintenance and housekeeping.
- Be available for emergency call-ins outside of regular working hours.
Minimum Qualifications - High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Ohio Drivers License and insurability under the Citys insurance plan.
- Ohio Class II Water Supply Operator License required
- Must obtain Ohio Class III Water Supply Operator License within three (3) years of appointment.
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience in water plant operations or equivalent combination of education experience and training.
- Must be available to work nights weekends and holidays as scheduled.
Preferred Skills and Abilities - Familiarity with water treatment operations laboratory procedures and SCADA systems.
- Ability to respond effectively to operational issues and maintain accurate records.
- Strong attention to safety and regulatory compliance.
- Ability to serve in a leadership or back-up operational capacity.
Work Environment - Exposure to chemicals confined spaces loud noise and inclement weather.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and work in physically demanding environments.
- Classified as medium work per U.S. Department of Labor standards.
Compensation and Benefits - Starting Hourly Rate: $24.36
- Shift Differential: Up to 10% may apply
- Comprehensive benefits package including health insurance paid leave and participation in OPERS (Ohio Public Employees Retirement System).
