Summary/Objective
Protects the Citys utility facilities and provides for safe and effective construction activities by locating and marking all City-owned pipelines boxes utility holes etc. at all construction sites throughout the city of Manhattan. This role also maintains current and accurate maps and drawings of those Public Works facilities in coordination with the Citys engineering division and other state and local entities and provides support for other department units.
Essential Functions
Locates monitors and maintains utility facilities works within city streets and right of ways daily.
- Prevents damage to utilities works and adjacent public and private property by locating underground utility facilities in an accurate and timely manner by using the Kansas One Call system for locate notification.
- Monitors construction activity as it relates to possible conflicts with underground City utilities.
- Operates maintains and is accountable for city vehicle that is assigned to the position.
- Develops and maintains detailed records of all activities.
- Works in and around high traffic areas.
- Performs daily interactions with citizens contractors and other employees.
Verifies accuracy of existing utility maps and reports needed changes and/or additions to proper authority for mapping and/or geographic information input.
- Maintains current and accurate information on maps and geographic information system.
- Assists supervisors and other departmental personnel in other projects for the benefit of the City and/or the department.
Requirements
Required Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of experience in utility maintenance construction or related field.
- Valid drivers license.
- Locate training.
- 811 dig safe training required within 6 months of hire.
- OSHA 10 certification required within 6 months of hire.
- Once Call Concepts for ticket management.

- City issued Cell Phone if applicable.
- Retirement/Pension - City employees are required by statute to contribute to the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS). Voluntary retirement contributions are offered with Nationwide Mission Square and Empower KPERS 457.
