The microbial community of the worlds oceans represents a large and underutilized resource for versatile and robust enzymes with potential technological applications. Despite high pressure low temperature and high salinity marine microbes efficiently utilize lignin-derived molecules as source of energy nutrients and carbon. Aromatic carbon such as lignin-derived organic matter initially persists but is eventually degraded by photochemistry and microbial enzymes.
This project seeks to translate metagenomic information to enzymatic function and biogeochemical impacts in marine carbon cycling. The goal is to discover produce and characterize enzymes involved in conversion of persistent dissolved organic matter in the ocean in order to understand the features of the enzymes as well as the organic matter persistence.
Responsibilities and qualifications

You must have a two-year masters degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year masters degree within natural sciences in particular bioinformatics microbial ecology or molecular biology (cloning). We expect you to have experience in designing and conducting laboratory experiments and to have good programming skills (R Python or Matlab) particularly regarding bioinformatic addition you are expected to haveinsight into plant biomass composition chemistry and analytics some practical experience with enzyme bioinformatics and hands-on experience in cloning for recombinant enzyme production will be well suited for the role. Preferably candidates also have practical experience in conducting enzyme assay measurements and/or organic matter characterization. Strong communication skills in English both written and oral are important along with the ability to conduct research independently and solve problems effectively. Good collaborative skills and a strong interest in participating in an interdisciplinary and international research environment are also highly valued.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval. The candidate will be enrolled in the PhD school of DTU Aqua and be associated with the Greenland Institute for Natural Resources. The Section for Oceans and Arctic in DTU Aqua covers a wide research spectrum from oceanography population ecology observation technology and the Arctic.
