Position SummaryThe Thriving Communities Director role is an exciting position that will support a burgeoning portfolio of work to bring to life TPLs community-centered mission to life in rural areas in the Northern Rockies. This position engages with communities throughout the Northern Rockies to identify communities in need of TPLs mission delivery and services in order to project manage and fundraise for programmatic execution. The position will manage a dynamic workstream that supports TPLs Northern Rockies Office to engage communities specifically in SW Montana in their efforts to conserve land and build trails and come together to mitigate the impacts of polarization social isolation and division. Further the Thriving Communities Director will support the Northern Rockies Director and Northern Rockies Director of Philanthropy to understand where TPL efforts may be viable needed and importantly wanted in Tribal and Indigenous Communities throughout Montana Idaho and Wyoming.
Essential Functions40% Program Development and Management:The Director will be responsible for working with partners both public and private to bring Trust for Public Lands Northern Rockies Thriving Communities Program to life in Park County MT. The development and maintenance of positive relationships with landowners public and non-profit partners including elected officials and local state and federal agency leadership and staff and major donors will be paramount. The Director will develop and monitor project management assets (timelines workplans and budgets) and lead effective collaborations (meetings workshops) in close coordination with TPLs Northern Rockies Office and with colleagues across departments and geographies. The Director will support the Northern Rockies Director and Mountain West Director of Philanthropy with strategic planning including evaluation tools community engagement resources and reporting tools that streamline our help diversify and expand the impact of TPL in the Northern Rockies the Thriving Communities Director will help identify new program opportunities where community needs align with available or potential public and philanthropic the Director will work with TPLs land protection park development trail development and other national and field services to advance these opportunities to completion.
40% External Relations:The Thriving Communities Director will increase the visibility and brand awareness of TPL throughout the Northern Rockies region to expand programmatic opportunities partnerships and philanthropic support. Through the building of trusting relationships and deep listening this position will ensure that TPL is embedded in rural communities throughout the region. With a local community centered presence it is the hope that TPL further cultivates its role as a thought leader problem solver and invested partner in these communities. This position will develop and maintain relationships for the benefit of TPL in a number of sectors but with a particular focus on Indigenous and Tribal Communities. The Director will audit current conservation and landback efforts underway throughout the region; coordinate with TPLs Senior Director of Tribal and Indigenous Lands and TPLs Director of Tribal Community Schoolyards to assess the needs of Tribal and Indigenous Communities in the Northern Rockies; and facilitate relationship building.
20% Philanthropy:Funding support for the Northern Rockies Program and programs it carries out is derived primarily from private philanthropic dollars. The Director will work in close coordination with TPL philanthropy staff both locally and across the country to cultivate and solicit major gifts from individuals foundations and corporations. The Director will work with the Northern Rockies Events and Board Manager to provide support for the Northern Rockies Advisory Board including engagement event solicitation of gifts from existing board members and the recruitment of new board members.
Qualifications- Strong commitment to TPLs shared values (Belonging Creativity Collaboration Impact and Hope) to effectively work across the organization.
- At least 11 years of experience in an organization focused on outdoor access/recreation park/trail creation and/or land and wildlife conservation
- At least 11years of relevant non-profit work experience or the equivalent including at least 5 years of staff management experience. Experience serving as an Executive Director preferred or other positions of leadership
- Demonstrated experience working with underserved communities
- Experience interfacing with and effectively engaging diverse groups (staff volunteers stakeholders politicians agency partners etc.)
- Extensive experience working with fundraisers and securing funding for mission support from public and private sources
- Experience with public finance techniques government funding practices and procedures the foundation community fundraising marketing practices best management practices and budgeting practices
- An entrepreneurial spirit initiative energy the capacity to lead mentor and inspire others the capacity to be both a high performer and a team player common sense and a sense of humor.
- Excellent communication skills including writing and public speaking
- An ability and willingness to travel as required and to work flexible hours outside a 9-5 schedule.

CompensationTrust for Public Land is a hybrid work environment and this role will ideally be located near our Bozeman MT office. As a full-time employee you will be eligible for the Trust for Public Lands comprehensive benefits program which includes medical dental and vision insurance vacation and sick pay plus holidays a year end office closure and a 403(b)-retirement plan currently with up to a 7% company match. This position is a 32-hour per week role. We offer competitive salaries commensurate with experience; the anticipated hiring range for this position is $88000-$92000 annually prorated for a 80% schedule.
