Main Purpose of Job
This position functions as a Natural Resources Biologist I at Albert Powell Hatchery and Cushwa Fish Hatcheries to rear and produce several varieties of trout. This position is responsible for assuring the completion of all daily duties assigned by the Facility Manager or Assistant Facility Manager as it pertains to scheduled weekly fish culture activities and independently on assigned weekend duty. Work output produces trout to support statewide management needs such as put-and-take trout stocking special management area trout stocking and youth fishing rodeos. These facilities are also a major source to supply other Fishing and Boating Services hatcheries with juvenile position directly supports the agencys mission of natural enhancement by providing recreational fishing opportunities for Marylands citizens and visitors and supporting restoration of coldwater fish populations (DNR goals 1 3 5 and 6).
POSITION DUTIES
The position participates at the Albert Powell and Cushwa Fish Hatcheries in the coldwaterfish culture and production of several varieties of salmonid fish species for fish stock enhancement statewidemanagement needs put-and-take trout stocking special management area trout stocking and youth fishing position participates in education/outreach cooperative fish culture projects and restoration of coldwater fishspecies for Maryland waters. This position uses a variety of strategies to raise trout for stocking including intensiveculture extensive culture and integrated fish culture. Other strategies and duties include egg incubation fryrearing and daily fish culture rearing of trout as directed by the facility manager of the Albert Powell Fish position is responsible for the completion of all daily fish culture activities maintenance of the facility fishloading and fish distribution by truck requiring a Class B Commercial Drivers License. This position isresponsible for assuring the completion of all daily duties assigned by the Facility Manager as it relates toscheduled weekly culture activities and independently on assigned weekend and holiday duty.
Work schedule and physical working conditions: many activities require work outside assigned work hoursand adjustment of work schedules. Work is performed indoors and outdoors in variable and sometimes adverseweather conditions. Ability to work in hot and cold wet conditions in and around water. May require working alonein remote locations. Able to respond to emergencies quickly and work outside normal work hours. Travel isrequired for short periods of time to accomplish agency goals and required training. Ability to lift and move fifty(50) pounds.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:Four years of professional experience conducting research and analysis in thefields of biology biochemistry environmental science natural sciencenatural resources management botany marine biology marine ecology physicaloceanography ichthyology fisheries management wildlife management or zoology.
Notes: may substitute the possession of a Bachelors degree in biologyenvironmental aquaculture natural science natural resources managementbotany marine biology marine ecology or physical oceanography ichthyologyfisheries management wildlife management zoology or a natural resourcesmanagement related field of study from an accredited college or university forthe required experience. may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as acommissioned officer in the natural resources management and biologicalsciences classifications or natural resources management and biologicalsciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on ayear-for-year basis for the required experience.DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Position has experience culturing fish eggs larvae juvenile and adults in both tank and raceway culture.
- Proficiency in using spreadsheets and database software preferably Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access.
- Experience with driving a truck handling/trailering and hauling live fish. Position will need to acquire a class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL).
- Position will have prior experience working at a Coldwater Cool water or Warmwater fish hatchery facility.
LICENSES REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operators license valid in the State of Maryland.
