Job Summary

Job Title

Master Thesis - Adaptive Acoustic Compensation for Speech intelligibility

Job Description

Category: DSP and Acoustic

Scope: 2 students completing 30/60 credits (20/40 weeks) each.

Background

Axis Communications designs and manufactures a wide range of loudspeaker products intended for use in diverse acoustic environments. Ensuring optimal speech intelligibility in these varying conditions is a significant challenge. This master thesis project aims to explore and evaluate different methods for automatically adapting loudspeaker performance to enhance speech intelligibility based on the specific acoustic characteristics of the installation environment.

Goal

The objectives listed below are meant as suggestions rather than strict requirements. We will decide together which objective to focus on and if any of them should be adjusted to fit your interests and the direction of the thesis.

  • Investigate and catalog various methods for measuring and detecting the acoustic properties of different environments both indoors and outdoors.
  • Evaluate the suitability of these methods for integration with Axis Communications loudspeaker products.
  • Research and identify different approaches to compensate for the acoustic characteristics of an environment with a focus on improving speech intelligibility.
  • Implement and test these compensation methods considering varying levels of complexity to assess their effectiveness.
  • Compare the results of the adaptive acoustic compensation methods with traditional approaches such as simply increasing sound pressure levels.
  • Use objective evaluation methodologies using standardized metrics and gather user feedback to capture the human experience of speech intelligibility.
  • Summarize findings and provide recommendations for design aspects to be emphasized in future Axis Communications products
