General Description:
The Pathologists Assistant reports to the Laboratory Medical Director and the Laboratory Administrative Director.
Provides support to attending pathologists and histology technologists. Primarily processes and dissects (i.e. grosses) surgical pathology specimens using standardized methods in accordance with College of American Pathologists standards department procedures and other relevant regulations and standards. Maintains a calm demeanor exercises reasoned judgment and demonstrates a commitment to patient safety and quality of care. The position shall exemplify the desired Culture of Choice and philosophies of Parrish Healthcare.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Identifies specimens and determines appropriate sections to analyze; dissects describes prepares fixes and stores surgical specimens for light microscopy immunofluorescence immunohistochemistry frozen section microscopy and other ancillary studies.
  • Executes imaging techniques and principals used in anatomic pathology as needed.
  • Provides technical assistance for hospital initiatives involving gross room processes.
  • Collects and processes biobanking tissues and bodily fluids per institutional IRB approved protocols.
  • Prepares materials and participates on interdisciplinary meetings (tumor boards surgical pathology conferences autopsy conferences).
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times in accordance with recognized privacy policies and regulations.
  • Performs similar or related duties as assigned.
  • Knows fire disaster and safety procedures and regulations as it pertains to the work area
Requirements:

Formal Education:
  • Bachelors degree in a chemical or biological science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting requirements defined in CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489. Masters degree preferred. Accredited Pathologist Assistant Program graduates preferred.
Work Experience:
  • One or more years of experience performing gross examination and evaluation of surgical and/or autopsy specimens. Pathologist Assistant Program graduates require no experience.
Required Licenses Certifications Registrations:
  • Certification or certification-eligible by the American Association of Pathologists Assistants American Society of Clinical Pathology or equivalent recognized organization required upon hire. If certification-eligible upon hire must obtain within 2 years from hire date.
