Job Duties:

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Division of Finance and Administrative Affairs is currently seeking to fill a Police Lieutenant position for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Police Department.

This position is responsible for the supervision of police sergeants and police officers by providing leadership in planning directing and monitoring law enforcement investigating and all other field operations assignments and certain specialized functions of the department. This supervision includes maintaining a supervisory team which is responsive to and supportive of Departmental and University policies and goals; maintaining effective liaison with all other University departments and agencies which interact with or impact on police operations; coordinating Departmental operational activities with staff personnel support for administrative clerical and training functions; applying and recommending appropriate disciplinary actions when necessary; preparing and recommending promotions merit evaluations and additional training; taking personal command of operations during occasions of any serious threats or disruptions; and personally supervising major criminal investigations.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Identifies develops and facilitates unit staff training opportunities
  • Directs unit operations and staff and monitors compliance with applicable laws rules and regulations
  • Exercises supervisory authority including hiring transferring suspending promoting managing conduct and performance discharging assigning rewarding disciplining and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • Engages in problem solving threat assessment and/or conflict resolution for a wide range of issues and incidents which may include citizen complaints against staff threats disasters large scale or complex planned events or critical incidents which may require use of the Incident command system campus emergency alerts and the activation and operation of the campus emergency operation center while fully managing and leading operations during the event incident or disaster
  • Serves as a leadership representative and main point of contact with law enforcement agencies institutional work units news media social services and special interest groups
  • Develops and implements operating policies and procedures that align with the strategic direction and initiatives of the work unit
  • Schedules logistics and resources to assist with the protection of life property and the preservation of peace and good order; and provides emergency aid to the institutional community

Required Qualifications:

  • Seven or more years of full-time law enforcement experience
  • Three or more years of full-time experience as a police supervisor (sergeant or above)
  • Possess a valid Wisconsin Driver License or possess a valid license from another state and are eligible to receive a Wisconsin Driver license and authorization to drive a University vehicle upon appointment
  • Be free of any felony convictions
  • Be free of any domestic abuse convictions
  • No criminal convictions within the past five years
  • No convictions for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in the past five years
  • Current Wisconsin Law Enforcement Certification or have been certified within the last two years OR be a certified Law Enforcement Officer in another state and be eligible for certification by WI LESB

Preferred Qualifications:

Highly qualified candidates for this position will also have:

  • Experience working as a police officer in a higher education environment
  • Experience working as a police supervisor in a higher education environment
  • Experience with Clery Title IX and FERPA
  • Experience evidenced by career examples of working and participating in a community policing model
  • Experience as field training officer (or equivalent)
  • Advanced leadership training
  • Holds a Bachelors Degree by an accredited college or university
