Job Description:
The City of Detroit is seeking skilled Diesel Mechanics to join our dedicated team responsible for servicing and maintaining a fleet of vehicles critical to city operations including police fire waste management snowplows rear loaders and side loaders. The successful candidates will initially work full-time for the first 4 to 6 weeks after which the position will transition to an on-call role providing flexibility while still serving the communitys needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform diagnostics repairs and maintenance on a variety of diesel vehicles and equipment.
- Conduct routine inspections to ensure the safety and reliability of vehicles.
- Troubleshoot and repair issues related to heavy-duty engines braking systems suspension and steering and electrical systems.
- Maintain accurate records of service performed and parts used.
- Collaborate with other team members to ensure efficient workflow and timely completion of repairs.
- Follow all safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
Job Prerequisites Licenses & Certifications:
- Must be presently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
- State of Michigan Class B commercial drivers license (with B endorsement) is preferred.
- Must be State certified in 2 or more of the following areas:
- HD Engine Repair
- HD Braking Systems
- HD Suspension & Steering Systems
- HD Electrical Systems
- Candidates must possess their own small and large hand tools rolling tool storage and power/air tools necessary to perform all assigned work.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; further technical training or certification in diesel mechanics is preferred.
- Proven experience as a diesel mechanic or in a similar role.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
