Description

Primary Objective

The Ophthalmic Apprentice learns the concepts skills and abilities necessary to provide clinical and administrative support to Providers to collaboratively ensure the delivery of high quality compassionate care and visual imaging services to CEENTAs patients.

Essential Job Functions

The essential functions for the position include:

  • Complete a training program for visual imaging and diagnostic testing services and ophthalmic assisting
  • Demonstrate proficiency on the knowledge concepts and skills learned in each training program including:
    • Applicable anatomy
    • Obtain and document past medical and surgical histories chief complaint history of present illness (HPI) and vital signs
    • Prepare and administer medications as directed by the Provider
    • Perform visual imaging and diagnostic testing including but not limited to Visual Field Testing Keratometry Fundus Photography Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Manual and Automated Lensometry
    • Perform preliminary ophthalmic work-up including Visual Assessment Pupil Assessment Phoropter Tonometry Ocular Motility Testing Glare Testing Refractometry Pachymetry Lensometry Slit Lamp Examination Ishihara (Color) Plate Test Amsler Grid and Schirmer Test
    • Manage provider and resource schedules in the EHR system
    • Maintain applicable workqueues in the EHR system
    • Index documentation pertinent to patient care from the document management system to the EHR system
    • Perform clinical room turnover/set-up and equipment sterilization including use of Autoclave
    • Maintain stock of office and clinical supplies and order from appropriate vendor when needed
  • Practically apply the knowledge concepts and skills learned during the training programs by fulling the roles of Ophthalmic Imaging Technician and/or Ophthalmic Assistant as dictated by clinic need
  • Maintain OSHA standards to ensure sterilized and safe environment
  • The ability to work on-site
  • Predictable reliable and prompt attendance

This role will impact CEENTAs ability to achieve its mission by learning and demonstrating proficiency in ophthalmic care and services to become an integral member of the care team providing administrative and clinical support to the Providers.

Supervision

This position reports to the Manager of Imaging and Radiology Services.

Work Environment

This position functions in a multi-specialty clinic with high patient volume. This role may be exposed to contagious or infectious diseases and therefore may be required to wear personal protective equipment at times. This position routinely uses standard medical office equipment as well as standard medical diagnostic equipment. Physical Demands:

Frequently required to stand; walk; sit in front of a computer; type; perform repetitive mouse clicks; use hands to finger handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms to assist patients and/or providers/staff

Occasionally assists with moving or positioning wheel-chair bound patients clinical equipment and office supplies up to 300 pounds

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position with core hours Mondays-Fridays 8:00am 5:00pm but some Saturday shifts will be required. Hours are subject to variation based upon clinic needs.

Travel

Travel to various CEENTA locations required dependent upon business need.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience in a medical office setting or customer service preferred but not required.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Ability to obtain and maintain BLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required.
