ABOUT THE ROLE

Are you an experienced Equipment Operator who takes pride in keeping streets sidewalks and neighborhoods safe and well-maintained The City of Fountain Valley is looking for a skilled Equipment Operator IIto join our Public Works this vital role youll operate a variety of light medium and heavy equipment to improve and maintain our communitys infrastructure - everything from paving streets and repairing sidewalks to painting school crosswalks and changing street name signs.

Our street crew has a total of seven staff members who work collaboratively with other Public Works crews as well as other City departments such as the Police Department Recreation and Community Services. This is more than just operating equipment - its about serving the community you live in working outdoors and being part of a dedicated team that keeps Fountain Valley a great place to live work and play. Job Overview

This position performs the following essential functions:

  • Perform maintenance and construction tasks to maintain safe streets sidewalks landscape and open space; operate equipment to remove and replace concrete surface improvements and asphalt paving; operate equipment to perform landscape maintenance and installation; operate equipment for the installation of street signage and striping.
  • Operate equipment including asphalt rollers paving machines graders traffic painting equipment root pruners aerial trucks concrete saws and related equipment.
  • Perform skilled work including excavations shoring applications surfacing earth moving laying pipes and loading and hauling materials.
  • Perform heavy semi-skilled manual labor construction and maintenance work when the nature of the job does not require constant operation of equipment.
  • Grade shape backfill and contour surfaces in accordance with engineering specifications.
  • Load transport and unload a variety of materials including stone gravel dirt asphalt and timber.
  • Perform minor maintenance on assigned equipment including lubricating parts making minor adjustments and repair and developing and maintaining relevant records.
  • Perform traffic control at the worksite set up cones direct traffic and assist the public.
Other Job Related Duties
  • May work in a lead capacity on a temporary basis in the absence of a Foreman or Supervisor.
  • May perform as needed technical oversight and training to Maintenance Workers and Temporary Laborers.
  • Complete a variety of checklists maintain a variety of records and complete reports as assigned.

Qualification Guidelines

EDUCATION:

  • High School graduation equivalent or possession of a General Education Development Test (GED) certificate is required.
  • College-level coursework with an emphasis in public works maintenance and/or construction is highly desirable.
EXPERIENCE:
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a position equivalent to an Equipment Operator I (including experience operating a variety of equipment such as asphalt rollers paving machines graders traffic painting equipment root pruners aerial trucks concrete saws and related equipment.

REQUIRED LICENSES:
Incumbents must maintain at all times the license(s) and certification(s) required for this job description.
  • A valid California Class A Commercial Drivers License (with airbrake and manual transmissions) is required at the time of appointment (or obtained within the probationary period) as a condition of employment. Tanker endorsement is highly desirable.

  • Possession of OSHA competence certification for trench shoring is desirable.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
  • Must be available for standby duty and periodic call-out during off-time hours to assist with emergencies.
