Summary of Position:
The Laboratory Assistant performs the general daily specimen processing testing and quality assurance as set forth by the laboratory guidelines. The Laboratory Assistant personnel monitor laboratory temperatures accession samples and examine specimen integrity to ensure acceptable levels of performance. The Laboratory Assistant immediately notifies the Laboratory Manager or Medical Laboratory Technician/Technologist of any problems or concerns related to patient testing.

Responsibilities:

• Performs Minimum to Waived levels of testing as listed in the test menu.
• Follows procedures for specimen handling processing test analyses reporting record maintenance of patient results and quality controls.
• Performs testing of proficiency samples and ensures that testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
• Adheres to the laboratorys quality control policies and documents all QC activities.
• Follows the laboratorys policies whenever test systems are not within the laboratorys established acceptable levels of performance.
• Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problem or notify the Laboratory Manager or other appropriate laboratory personnel.
• Ensures patient results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly.
• Documents all corrective actions taken when the test systems deviate from the laboratorys established performance specifications.
• Monitors test analyses and specimen examination.

• Ensures that the physical plant and environmental conditions are appropriate for the testing performed.
• Provides a safe environment from physical chemical and biological hazards.
• Accessions and processes laboratory specimens using good laboratory practices. Notifies originating clients of samples that deviate from acceptable standards in a timely fashion for specimen recollections.
• Performs other related duties as negotiated.

• High School Diploma.

• Waived laboratory testing only unless otherwise noted.

• Must be able to analyze variables and choose an effective course of action. Must react favorably in stressful situations.
• Must be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people and situations.
• Emotional stability and personal maturity are important attributes of this position.

• Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to operate laboratory instruments and computers.
• Requires a normal range of hearing and color vision.
• Requires standing reaching and lifting to 50 pounds.

• 7:30 am - 4:30 pm shift.
• Occasionally you may be called on to work overtime hours.
