Job Summary

2nd Shift Hours: Monday-Friday 2pm-10pm (hours are flexible)

The Automation & Controls Technician will provide support to production automation instrumentation and controls at the Kaukauna manufacturing facility. Works closely with the Senior Automation Specialist and operations team to ensure safe and reliable operation of process automation and control systems providing support as needed. Also provides as needed support to Bernatellos IT team such as access control camera system and help desk requests.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for repairing existing automation and controls in our facility
  • Provide hands-on technical support to all manufacturing operations for instrumentation and electrical control applications such as PLCs HMIs VFDs digital/analog sensors including information systems.
  • Provide printing support for thermal transfer direct thermal inkjet and laser printers including modifying print data when necessary and performing PMS on equipment.
  • Performs tests and maintenance on electrical and instrumentation equipment; interprets readings and outputs of equipment; ensures proper functioning of equipment.
  • Help manage changes to our system by keeping programs backed-up updating documentation schematics and drawings.
  • Monitors and analyzes key metrics and production data to help identify and track problems in production.
  • Investigate equipment failures using root cause analysis.
  • Provide startup support for capital projects/new equipment installations.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and maintaining access control and camera systems.
  • Provide hands on support for IT related issues.
  • Provide technical guidance to operations and maintenance personnel and provide suggestions to improve service and operations.
  • Serves as a liaison to contractors maintenance and operations personnel and other internal or external parties with respect to utilities and automation equipment instruments and related systems.
  • Investigate complex equipment failures using root cause analysis
  • Troubleshoot SCADA PLC software and hardware issues develops recommendations for change/modification: implements and documents changes applied to hardware and software.
  • Analyzes key metrics and production data to help identify and track problems in production. Provide new metrics when necessary.
  • Provide leadership and support to maintenance staff and level 1 controls staff.
  • Review engineering designs and modifications to control system and recommends both technical and operational improvements.

Education Licenses & Certifications:

  • Technical degree/diploma and/or equivalent manufacturing experience in automation setting. Minimum 5 years experience. (Maintenance experience with desire to enroll in technical degree will be considered.)
  • Skilled trade program certificates a plus
  • Apprenticeship completion a plus

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • 5 years minimum experience in working with mechanical pneumatics and hydraulics system.
  • Working knowledge of technical tools such as meters calibration devices electronic testers.
  • Ability to read understand and interpret schematics logic drawings and other prints or drawings.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and practices applicable to the repair and maintenance of electrical instrumentation and control equipment and related systems.
  • Operating knowledge of Microsoft Office software working proficiency with handheld computer
  • Experience and comfortable working autonomously while also understanding the importance of being teamwork oriented
  • Outstanding organizational and time-management skills
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and the capacity to learn existing and emerging technologies
  • Associates Degree in Automation/Electrical and minimum 5 years experience in manufacturing automation setting.
  • Autocad or Naviswork experience required
  • Rockwell Software Experience required
  • Other programming languages are a plus.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of digital control concepts such as analog and digital inputs and outputs sequences of operations point addressable devices closed loop and supervisory feedback systems device programming and serial communications/
  • Experience in computer networking and management.
  • Requires advanced abilities in use of a PC and application software.
  • Has extensive knowledge in mechanical pneumatics and hydraulics.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills
