Job Summary

JOB ASSIGNMENT: Northumberland and Union Counties (Milton Lewisburg Sunbury).Please note this is a part time short-term position with funding available through until June 30 2026 with the possibility of the position continuing if adult education if funding is continued.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP: This position reports directly to the Adult Education Program Manager and in their absence to the Assistant Executive Director/Chief Academic Officer.

JOB DEFINITION: The English as a Second Language Instructor is responsible for delivering instruction administering assessments and providing career and academic awareness and exploration activities for adult English as a Second Language (ESL) learners in the community. The instructor may teach basic mathematics; reading writing listening/speaking in English; career exploration and workforce education; and digital literacy in multiple contexts below the postsecondary level. Some instruction may be customized for local employer needs and take place at an employers site. Delivery of instruction is primarily in-person but opportunities to teach remotely using Zoom may occur.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide English language instruction in a variety of content areas contexts and instructional formats.
  2. Develop standards-aligned and competency-based lesson plans; design interactive and engaging learning activities for adult learners.
  3. Implement research-based teaching and learning strategies appropriate for adult English language learner in classroom and distance-learning environments including the use of technology.
  4. Direct the work of volunteer classroom aides to assist students.
  5. Administer formal and informal assessments to determine academic and workplace skills development needs and document progress.
  6. Develop and update individual learning plans with students; engage learners in goal-
    setting career awareness and career exploration activities.
  7. Conduct new student orientation and intake sessions.
  8. Maintain accurate and complete program paperwork student files and attendance
  9. Participate in continuous program improvement and professional development activities.
  10. Work with other staff members to promote program services and recruit adult learners.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Work cooperatively with program partners and community agencies to increase awareness of program services.
  2. Other program-related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or designee.

EDUCATION EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Bachelors degree with experience teaching English language learner; an ESL concentration or certification or TESOL certification is preferred but not required.
  • Experience teaching adult learners is preferred.
  • Computer experience with Microsoft Word Excel Outlook data entry artificial intelligence (AI) and email required.
  • Proficiency in utilizing vetted artificial intelligence (AI) is preferred. The ability to enhance AI skills will be required.
  • Experience managing file sharing with Google Drive and using the Zoom virtual meeting platform preferred but not required.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks based on project deadlines.
  • Ability to type accurately and maintain a high level of productivity.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with colleagues co-workers community agency personnel and students/trainees.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive and collaborative relationships using tact and diplomacy and remain calm in unpredictable situations.

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current approved Act 34 (PA State Police) Act 151 (PA Child Abuse Registry) and Act 114-FBI Fingerprint clearances are required and must be renewed at appropriate specific intervals pursuant to Act 153 of 2014 (revised Act 15 of 2015).
  • Current approved Act 126 Mandated Reporter Training certificate showing completion of a minimum of three (3) hours of training every five (5) years.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of in-person and online professional development activities as required by grant funder and the CSIU.
  • Attend relevant conferences trainings and in-services to maintain and enhance professional development as recommended by the immediate supervisor or required by the position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Sedentary: Able to sit for extended periods of time but may involve walking and standing (periodically as required); able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Dexterity: Finger movements (computer keyboard calculator office equipment); eye-hand coordination.
  • Audio-Visual requirements: Within normal range with or without correction.
  • Worksite environment: Primarily indoors with occasional exposure to outdoor elements/climate during workday field trips or special projects.
  • Mental demands: Steady response to unpredictable situations ability to remain calm and productive during stressful situations; demonstrates independent judgment and discretion and is able to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and a safe manner.
  • Must be able to drive to locations throughout the CSIU service area and to state training events when required.

TIME AND SITE REQUIREMENTS:

  • This is a short-term part-time non-exempt position not to exceed 14 hours per week or 29 hours per week in combination with any additional CSIU part-time positions.
  • Additional working hours may become available and must be pre-approved by the immediate supervisor.
  • The program runs year-round from July to June.
  • Regular attendance at work is a requirement of this position; all absences must be approved by the immediate supervisor.
  • Attendance at occasional evening meetings and occasional overnight travel to training or conferences is required.

All property including intellectual property materials equipment or actual products and services developed or accrued as part of the job duties and responsibilities listed above is the property of the CSIU. It may not be used for personal profit or gain and will be relinquished to the CSIU upon termination of employment from the CSIU.
