Position Overview
The Athletic Director at Vance County High School is responsible for leading managing and developing the schools interscholastic athletic program. The AD ensures compliance with North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) regulations fosters student-athlete success and supports the mission of VCHS through athletics that promote teamwork discipline and excellence.
In addition to administrative duties the AD will also teach a Field Maintenance & Athletic Facility Operations course (or similar elective). This class will give students hands-on experience in athletic field care equipment management sports operations and leadership in athletic settings.
Key Responsibilities
Athletic Leadership & Program Development
Provide vision and leadership for all VCHS athletic programs (varsity junior varsity and emerging sports).
Recruit hire supervise and evaluate coaches ensuring adherence to NCHSAA district and school policies.
Oversee scheduling of games tournaments officials and team transportation.
Promote sportsmanship equity and academic accountability for all student-athletes.
Serve as the primary liaison between the school and the NCHSAA district athletic office officials and community partners.
Coordinate athletic fundraising sponsorships and booster club activities in collaboration with school administration.
Manage athletic publicity including social media updates game-day programs and community engagement.
Compliance & Safety
Ensure compliance with all NCHSAA eligibility requirements including academic standards attendance and conduct.
Supervise athletic event operations (crowd control concessions gate management security).
Oversee athletic training services injury protocols and risk management procedures.
Maintain accurate records of student eligibility coach certifications and athletic participation.
Budget & Resource Management
Develop and manage the athletic department budget in consultation with the Principal.
Oversee the purchase distribution and inventory of athletic equipment and uniforms.
Monitor and maintain athletic facilities ensuring fields courts and gyms are safe and well-kept.
Collaborate with custodial/maintenance staff and external vendors on repairs and improvements.
Teaching: Field Maintenance & Athletic Operations
Teach a course focused on field maintenance athletic facility operations and sports program management.
Provide students with hands-on opportunities in turf care equipment upkeep scoreboard/sound system operation and event setup/breakdown.
Incorporate lessons on leadership responsibility and teamwork within the athletic context.
Prepare students to understand the behind-the-scenes work that supports successful athletic programs.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelors degree in education sports management or related field.
Valid North Carolina teaching license (or ability to obtain).
Minimum 3 years of coaching and/or athletic administration experience.
Strong organizational communication and leadership skills.
Knowledge of NCHSAA rules eligibility standards and athletic operations.
Preferred
Masters degree in sports management education administration or related area.
Experience in field maintenance turf management or sports facility operations.
Prior experience teaching or leading student groups in athletics or operations.
CPR/First Aid certification and NCHSAA coaching certification.
