The Opportunity
Expressions of interest are sought from outstandingdomestic and international candidatesforPhDstudywithin theDepartment of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Faculty of EngineeringMonash University.

This PhD project forms part of theBaosteelAustralia Joint Centre (BAJC)collaboration and willinvestigate howlocal phase transformations can be harnessed to design new classes ofadvancedsteels. The research aims to develop a mechanistic understanding of localised transformationbehaviour and to design novel alloys that achieve superior combinations of strength ductility anddamage tolerance.

Working within theMetallurgy and Corrosion Research Cluster the candidate willcombineexperimental studiescomputational modelling anddata-driven alloy designto:

  • Understand the mechanisms of local austenite-to-ferrite transformation in low-alloy steels;
  • Develop frameworks to predict and control these transformations;

Monash University hosts a unique suite of characterisation facilitiesincluding advanced electronmicroscopy in-situ analytical tools and high-temperature testing systemsproviding exceptionalopportunities to perform high-quality impactful project offers close collaborationwithBaosteels Central Research Institute and has the opportunity to travel to Shanghai China.
