The Marine Operations Department at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine Atmospheric and Earth Science is seeking a U.S. Coast Guard licensed crew member in charge of the vessels deck department. TheMate is responsible for the safety and security of the ship under the guidance of the Captain. Responsibilities include the crews welfare and training in areas such as safety firefighting search and rescue. Carries out orders as directed by the Captain and reports directly to the Chief Mate and/or Captain.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversees all maintenance of the vessels deck equipment and machinery
  • Oversees line handlers during vessel movements
  • Operates cranes winches anchoring machinery and other scientific instruments
  • Oversees small boat maintenance and operates small boats when necessary
  • Assists with lading and unlading of all cargo and scientific gear
  • Stands navigational watches
  • Maintains vessels chart inventory
  • Participates in safety drills as directed by the vessels Emergency Station Bill
  • In charge of vessel when the Captain or senior mate is not onboard or incapacitated to command the vessel
  • Member of ships firefighting team
  • Supervise deckhand
  • Related duties as directed by the Captain

SKILLS

  • General vessel navigation
  • Ship Handling
  • Advanced seamanship marlinspike and rigging
  • Ability to perform voyage planning and navigational calculations
  • Supervisory skills
  • Shipboard firefighting
  • Basic first aid
  • Computer skills - ability to use email standard office software compose & format correspondence
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities organize and plan daily tasks and projects
  • Possess customer service skills

EDUCATION

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • US Coast Guard license of 100 tons or greater
  • STCW endorsement
  • Merchant Mariners Document - Able Bodied Seaman or greater
  • Unlimited Radar Observer (preferred)
  • Automatic Radar Plotting Aids certified (preferred)
  • Basic Fire Fighting
