East Side House Settlement (ESH) is a community resource in the South Bronx. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create economic and civic opportunities for themselves their families and their communities.
East Side Houses Early Childhood programs provide Early Head Start and Head Start services in a safe supportive educational environment for children ages 18 months to 5 years of age. Serving 231 children daily from five locations the comprehensive program is designed to develop the cognitive social emotional and physical skills of children in a safe supportive environment. Children and families receive a broad range of educational nutritional social and preventive health staff foster partnerships with families so they can support school learning and achievement and advocate for their children and themselves. We expect that all staff will work collaboratively and with the community to promote school readiness while creating a safe healthy and protective environment.
Doula Responsibilities:
Provide non-biased emotional physical and informational support during pregnancy labor and the birth process and the immediate postpartum period
Work closely with the birthing person and family as they explore their values and needs surrounding birth
Encourage the birthing person to seek care and a place of birth that reflects their own values and needs
Assist in the preparation of birth preferences to facilitate communication with the birth team
Model teach and encourage effective communication
Encourage informed decision making
Provide information on birth options and resources
Provide the client with non-medical comfort techniques for labor such as positions and movement comforting touch visualization breathing techniques and affirmation
Seek to foster a cooperative respectful and positive atmosphere with the birth team
Provide support to the birthing persons support partner and/or family
Support and assist initial breastfeeding
Assist the family in processing their birth experience
Answer general questions about newborn care and breastfeeding
Refer to healthcare professionals when support requires clinical assessment a need for prescription or medical diagnosis
Listen as the birthing person processes their birth experience

Required Education and Experience
New York State Completion of a Doula training program and certification by a recognized Doula certification organization.
Complete at least 24 hours of training including childbirth antepartum postpartum and birth doula training
Attend at least one breastfeeding class two childbirth classes and two births
Write a position paper about the role of doulas in childbirth
Complete cultural competency training
Pass a doula proficiency exam
Complete HIPAA/client confidentiality training
Apply for a National Provider Identification Number (NPI#)
Sign and date an attestation form confirming your training
Submit a copy of your training certificate or a signed letter from your training organization
Complete and return the required enrollment forms
Proven experience as a doula or related role.
Strong knowledge of childbirth and postpartum care.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to provide emotional support and handle stressful situations.
Flexible schedule with the ability to be on-call for births.
Physical stamina for long periods of standing and the ability to lift to 25 pounds.
Bilingual preferred

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers phones photocopiers filing cabinets and fax machines.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to talk or listen. This is a sedentary role; however some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Workdays/hours subject to change based on ESHs needs. Work on weekends holidays or after work hours for projects special events etc. to meet program operational goals.
Remote Work
ESH has determined that up to (0%) of this position can be remote due to COVID-19. Subject to change as public health conditions evolve.
Travel
Family workers travel to family homes for home visits. Travel required between sites professional development and training. Parents may need to be accompanied to the referring agency.
