Overview
The Laboratory Supervisor works as an integrated team member within the overall department of laboratory medicine promoting training and high standards of service delivery. Supervises daily clerical organization using of various logs reports etc. to monitor the clerical process specimen processing and clerical duties of the Medical Laboratory Assistants in outpatient drawing sites. Coordinates the data entry of all outpatient physician orders and venipunctures at Memorial Medical Center Outpatient drawing facilities (i.e. Baylis Lab Admissions Testing Lab Simmons Lab and all Express Care locations). Corrects patient encounter by reversing charges crediting updating demographic and billing information to ensure encounters are correct. Reviews patient satisfaction surveys and develops action plans with staff to provide exceptional customer satisfaction and maintain desired goal.
Qualifications
Blood Bank Chemistry Hematology and Microbiology Sections: One of the following active certifications is required:
- American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS);
- National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA) Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS);
- American Medical Technologists (AMT) Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT);
- American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT);
- Department of Health Services (HHS formerly HEW) Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT); or
- Meet grandfather requirements under (Clinical Laboratory Improvements Amendments) CLIA 88.
Histology Section: One of the following active certifications is required:
- American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board Certification as a Histotechnician (HT) or
- American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board Certification as a Histotechnologist (HTL).
Reference Section:
Valid Illinois drivers license.
One of the following active certifications is required:

Frequent to continuous exposure to unpleasant/irritating substances. Exposure to hazardous and/or potentially injurious elements or conditions is considerable.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Must be able to work any shift and/or weekend. Moderate physical exertion including frequent (30 to 70%) walking standing bending and reaching and frequent lifting of average loads (6 to 25 pounds).
Mental Demands
- Must have absolute integrity in the accurate performance and reporting of results. Must exercise discretion good independent judgment and reasoning ability. Must be able to work under stress caused by turn-around times. Must use judgment in planning work assessing results solving problems taking or recommending action.
- Ability to adhere to strict confidentiality requirements.
Responsibilities
- Serves as specialist and resource person for section.
- Prepares reports; completes assignments; resolves technical and administrative problems.
- Plans functions of assigned area; sets priorities; recommends and justifies equipment and procedures; complies with accrediting agencies.
- Maintains optimal cost-effective delivery of section services with recommendations for capital budget.
- Analyzes cost of procedures.
- Maintains minimal inventory of supplies; evaluates and recommends quality low-cost supplies.
- Improves the departments performance by utilizing Quality Control programs and participating in Quality Assurance programs.
- Allows minimal downtime.
- Provides excellent documentation.
- Ensures accuracy validity and confidentiality of results (i.e. sample/reagent/equipment/procedural/personnel/quality control).
- Takes or recommends corrective action as necessary.
- Supervises personnel in section; ensures that productivity level and turn-around times are within acceptable limits.
- Maintains current educational material for training of both technical personnel and couriers.
- Develops maintains and evaluates standards of performance.
- Schedules daily activities.
- Maintains effective working relationships at all levels.
- Ensures continuing education and professional development for self and others.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
