About this role: Based in our Geraldton office and reporting to the Editor of the Geraldton Guardian and Midwest Times the opportunity is open for either a graduate journalist with a university degree looking to launch their career OR an experienced reporter considering a sea change and keen to take on a new and exciting challenge. As sports reporter you will be covering and helping to steer our coverage of local sports including match reports hard news human interest stories and analysis on a wide range of sports in Geraldton and the Mid West-Gascoyne from AFL cricket basketball and netball to soccer surfing windsurfing water polo softball hockey and much more.

What We Need: This role will have you covering a range of sports (and potentially other news) in a region rich in story potential. Roster includes weekend work so you will need to be flexible. You will hone your craft on the Geraldton Guardian which publishes Tuesday and Friday each week and the free Midwest Times paper out every Wednesday as well as across our digital platforms. An experienced candidate (ideally with at least 1-3 years of experience) would be considered for a possible leadership role within the newsroom which would include extra responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

Covering live sports action and gathering and writing original sports and news stories for publication in print and online platforms.
Developing positive relationships with key people and organisations.
Breaking stories and creating engaging print and digital content.
Contributing to news planning meetings and liaising with the Editor regarding story development.
Interviewing and photographing subjects and live sports action confidently and professionally; and
Representing the Company in a professional and courteous manner.

What You Bring:

The ability to work under high pressure and be flexible with work hours.
Strong interviewing and communication skills.
A sense of urgency and focus on deadlines.
A passion for local sports and news.
Existing skills or a strong desire to upskill with digital production and social media promotion; and
A valid drivers licence.
