This posting is for multiple seasonal full-time positions for up to 5 months.

Equipment Operator IIs in Public Works will assist the Transportation Engineering and Operations department with winter operations during the 2025/2026 winter maintenance season (October to March).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain equipment as listed in Schedule B of the AUPE Collective Agreement including but not limited to truck plows sanders loaders and backhoes
  • Operate tandem trucks (in excess of 13650 kgs) and light tractors with attachments such as dump trucks loaders and trailers
  • Transport materials equipment parts and people to and from work sites
  • Load and unload materials and equipment from trucks; responsible for ensuring cargo is tarped and tied down in accordance with regulations
  • Clean and maintain equipment and vehicles to ensure ongoing efficient and effective operations; perform circle checks minor repairs preventative maintenance and report the need for major repairs or maintenance to supervisor
  • Complete appropriate backfill surface restoration landscaping and general site clean-up
  • Maintain on-site communication with work crew members and good public relations with the general public suppliers and other departments
  • Undertake work in accordance with OH&S legislation and County policies standards and procedures
  • Contribute to daily safety meetings and review standard operating procedures and safe work plans; participate in hazard assessments and incident reporting as required
  • Carry out written or oral instructions and maintain equipment records and work reports
  • Perform manual work related to winter maintenance (as required)
  • May be required to instruct and oversee the work of lower-level Operators and Labourers on performing safe and effective operations
  • May be assigned to operate equipment and other duties performed at lower levels as operationally required and qualified

Qualifications and Skills:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the safe operation care and maintenance of at least 2 pieces of heavy-duty equipment as listed in Schedule B Equipment Operator II in the AUPE Collective Agreement (wheel loader tandem axle truck street sweeper truck plow sander RPM snow blower road reclaimer patch truck rubber tire backhoe)
  • Experience operating a truck plow and sander is preferred for completion of winter maintenance work
  • Working knowledge of the policies and procedures to safely operate service and maintain assigned equipment and vehicles
  • Basic knowledge of the standard methods materials tools and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of roads and streets
  • Basic knowledge of engineering drawings specifications and grade sheets and the process of locating underground utilities
  • Working knowledge of OH&S regulations safe work practices and precautions (use of personal protection and safety equipment resources hazard identification and reporting)
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and demonstrate leadership skills
  • Capable of carrying out both verbal and written instructions produce or maintain accurate records (basic computer skills and mobile device literacy)

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 3 (or higher) Drivers License and submission of a 5-year Drivers Abstract with less than 7 demerits
  • Valid Airbrake (Q) endorsement
  • Shift work is required - this position works a rotating 12-hour shift of days and nights (7 days on/7 days off)
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions including adverse weather
  • Ability to perform physical labour which includes moderate to heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds) standing bending shoveling etc.
