THE POSITION
Reporting to a Principal Civil Engineer the Engineering Technician will be part of a team consisting of a total of one (1) Associate Engineer three (3) Assistant Engineers and two (2) Engineering Technicians (a total of 7 staff members). The Engineering Technician acts as the first line of customer interaction and helps the Division facilitate permit issuance conduct research and perform basic plan checks among other entry level engineering tasks.
This section is primarily responsible for the review and facilitation of development projects through the Engineering portion of the entitlement process including the establishment of conditions of approval. Staff is also responsible for engineering plan check related to private development projects such as single-family home projects commercial and industrial development projects including but not limited to grading WQMP storm drain systems and street addition the Section is also in charge of issuing permits for work occurring in the public right-of-way.
Education and/or Experience:
Graduation from high school and completion of two years of college level courses in engineering land use mathematics design drafting and/or surveying or inspection of public work facilities and projects or two years of increasingly responsible experience in sub-professional engineering work or any combination of training and experience that provides the desired knowledge.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of basic mathematics including algebra geometry and trigonometry; methods and materials used in the construction of public works facilities; policies and regulations governing the construction and maintenance of public works systems and facilities; basic civil engineering principles and practices including reading engineering plans preparing quantity takeoffs and producing cost estimates. Ability to perform technical research on engineering matters; communicate effectively orally and in writing; perform complex engineering calculations; prepare plans and estimates of routine public works and utility projects; use and care for engineering and drafting instruments and equipment.
Special Requirements:
Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate California drivers license and a satisfactory driving record.
