Job Summary

Description

Assist the Environmental Science Team in a variety of research projects such as wetland assessments habitat monitoring mangrove research or sea turtle research. Responsible for additional duties as assigned such as data entry sample processing and equipment maintenance.

Essential Duties

  • Learn and work with commonly used practices for laboratory procedures and field research.
  • Preparing gear for the field recording and organization of data/datasheets and accurate data entry.
  • Occasionally working with live animals.
  • Assist on Presentations.
  • Assist with other Science Department projects as needed.
  • Weekends/ holiday hours may apply to interns schedule.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a team member.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Written and oral communication skills.
  • Organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Occasional public interactions/science communication.
  • Must be able to plan ahead each day for your own personal apparel and needs based on current field conditions.
  • A positive attitude is a must.

Education and/or experience

Applicant must be at least a senior in college or possess a BS or BA in one of the biological or environmental sciences. Background in field survey techniques or willingness to learn.

Qualifications

Interest in field biology and willingness to work under adverse south Florida field conditions which include: intense heat humidity unpredictable weather and biting insects.

Willingness to work outside of the usual 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM business hours when necessary. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word PowerPoint and Access or Excel preferred.

Must possess a valid drivers license and clean driving record.

Working knowledge of the care and operation of outboards ATVs and ORVs or a willingness to learn is an asset.

Strong commitment to the conservation of the natural environment.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand walk stoop kneel crouch or crawl the ability to stand and walk in uneven terrain for many hours each day is a must. The employee is also frequently required to sit along with using hands to finger handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Special vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision.

Work Environment: The work environment can vary greatly from office conditions to multiple habitat types such as: freshwater/saltwater wetlands dry scrub mangroves and open water. The environmental variables for each habitat are very different and most days are subject to intense heat and biting insects.
