Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Teach introductory courses in Hawaiian language including Hawaiian 100 courses according to the established curriculum guidelines;
  2. Able to teach assigned classes in various modes of instruction (in-person online synchronous asynchronous and hybrid);
  3. Assist in the design and development of Hawaiian language curriculum at the university level including those appropriate for online courses;
  4. Provide service in areas of expertise to the university and larger community;
  5. Maintain at least one office hour per week for each section taught;
  6. Attend and participate in faculty meetings;
  7. Serve on faculty/administrative committees;
  8. Maintain an appropriate program of professional self-improvement;
  9. Perform community service and related tasks as assigned.

MinimumQualifications
  1. Masters degree in Hawaiian Language or equivalent in relevant field with major work within the area of Hawaiian language conferred by 11/01/2025.
  2. Thorough mastery of written and spoken Hawaiian language;
  3. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in Hawaiian and English;
  4. Knowledge of Hawaiian culture and the practical application of this knowledge;
  5. Evidence of successful experience in teaching courses at the college level (as substantiated by recent evaluations peer evaluations and/or current professional references);
  6. Demonstrate the ability to work effectively and collegially with students faculty staff and administration as substantiated by recent student evaluations peer evaluations and/or current professional references.

Desirable Qualifications
  1. Evidence of previous training in Hawaiian language teaching;
  2. Evidence of successful Hawaiian language teaching as exemplified by reviews indicating excellence in teaching undergraduate courses and mentoring students;
  3. Evidence of experience in developing Hawaiian language curriculum materials;
  4. Demonstrate significant knowledge and experience of Hawaiian culture and its link to Hawaiian language; and
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of traditional Hawaiian ways of knowing related to education and culture and a capacity for the practical application thereof.
