About the position
The Scientist I will lead research on forage quality ruminant nutrition and methane emission measurement providing strategic oversight to the Alliances forage quality laboratory respirometry chambers and in vivo methane measurement facilities. The position requires planning proposing and executing experiments in line with the highest scientific standards while also monitoring their implementation and ensuring safety and quality control.
The Scientist will guide research teams mentor staff sustain partnerships with donors and stakeholders and ensure that outputs contribute to advancing CGIARs research agenda on sustainable livestock and climate change mitigation.
The position will be based at the Alliances Americas Hub in Palmira Colombia with availability to travel within and outside the country.
Responsabilities
- Propose plan and execute research on forage quality animal nutrition and methane mitigation advancing the Low Methane Forages (LMF) project and related initiatives.
- Lead oversee and monitor the implementation of laboratory and field experiments including in vitro assays in vivo methane emission measurements using respirometry chambers and field trials and NIRS analyses ensuring rigorous scientific methodology robust data quality and compliance with safety standards.
- Coordinate the Animal Nutrition and Forage Quality Laboratory teams and technical staff involved in forage quality analyses in vivo methane emission measurements and related activities ensuring efficiency consistency and adherence to scientific and safety standards.
- Strengthen and sustain partnerships with CGIAR centers universities national research institutes the private sector donors and other stakeholders ensuring harmonized methodologies impactful outcomes and visibility of the Alliance in sustainable livestock research.
- Contribute to scientific knowledge through peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals as well as technical reports briefs and policy-relevant outputs.
- Contribute to the development and acquisition of competitive research proposals to support the growth and sustainability of the research program. At least (1) one successful proposal US$50.0000 per annum.
- Participate in international scientific conferences workshops and forums to share research findings and contribute to discussions on low methane forages and climate-smart livestock systems.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to project teams junior scientists postdoctoral fellows and research staff advising on results and ensuring alignment with project goals.

- PhD in Animal Science Agricultural Sciences or a related field with specialization in forage evaluation ruminant nutrition or methane mitigation.
- Proven research excellence with peer-reviewed publications in recognized scientific journals.
- Demonstrated experience in research project management from design to implementation executing and reporting.
- Experience with in vitro fermentation systems in vivo trials in vivo methane emission measurements (including respirometry chambers and field trials) and NIRS analysis.
- Proven ability to contribute to successful fundraising initiatives and donor engagement.
- Strong analytical and data interpretation skills with experience using statistical software (R SAS or Python).
- External recognition in a specific scientific domain (forage quality nutrition methane emissions).
- Fluency in English (oral and written).

This is a nationally recruited position based in Palmira Colombia. The initial contract will be for (1) one
year subject to a probation period of three months and is renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.
This position is graded at BG09 level on a scale of BG01 to BG14 (BG14 being the highest level according to the Alliance job classification framework policy).
