Associate/Full Professor of Film Studies

Job Description:

Barnard College invites applicants for an endowed chair position in Film and Media Studies at the rank of Full Professor or advanced Associate Professor. It is expected that the successful candidate will act as director of the Film Studies Program and help to develop the Program in collaboration with other departments at the College. We seek a candidate whose research and teaching contributes to the core undergraduate curriculum and who has experience teaching introductory lecture courses in film and media studies and history. Field of specialization is open but we especially encourage applicants with expertise in film/media history and theory emergent and digital media and documentary cinemas. Within these broad categories topics of specialization could include: feminist film and media; Black and/or Latino film; Queer cinemas; industry studies; histories of technology; cinemas of the global South; or the transition from film to video to digital media.

The candidate will be expected to teach a full range of courses from large lectures to specialist seminars and senior projects. They should demonstrate the capacity to innovate programming and provide administrative leadership. Barnard College has a vibrant and expanding undergraduate program which is closely linked with other units on campus from the Media Center Digital Humanities Center Athena Film Festival and the Artemis Rising Film Fellowship Program. These relationships represent a unique opportunity for programming and teaching. The successful candidate would be expected to work closely with the Film and Media Studies program in the School of the Arts at Columbia University.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must have a PhD in Film Studies or a related discipline and must already hold tenure at another at least 7 years of experience in the field are expected including directing or helping to direct a department or program.
