The role Te mahi
As a Laboratory Technician you will be part of a small team covering technical support for teaching research and external engagement in the School of Physical Education Sport and Exercise Sciences.
You will be involved in providing technical services for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research in areas such as exercise physiology biomechanics and motor learning.
Key tasks include:
Setup of equipment for labs and supporting during more complex labs including running of equipment when required.
Ensuring sufficient consumable items are available for each laboratory cycle.
Helping with delivery of whānau labs with a whakawhanaukataka student focus.
Providing technical support for Postgraduate research.
Involvement in commercial exercise testing services as well as tours and lab experiences for High School student groups.
The role requires you to maintain safety standards for use of Laboratory equipment and experimental techniques as well as regular maintenance of equipment.
This is a varied and broad technical role that allows for opportunities for the right candidate who wishes to expand their skillset in a dynamic work environment. Due to the broad range of specialist equipment the expectation is that specific training will be provided as required.

Relevant tertiary education preferably a qualification in the areas of Exercise and Sport Science.
Experience working in Exercise Sport Science Laboratory or clinical testing is advantageous.
Confidence with technology.
Excellent Computing skills.
Ability to work under pressure meet deadlines and able to prioritise own work schedule.
Dedication to working in a culturally safe and respectful way with an understanding of Te Ao Māori the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Pasifika values.
Graduates with Sport and Exercise Science qualifications are encouraged to apply.

This is a permanent full-time (37.5 hours per week) Academic-year-only (February to October) position due to start early February 2026 in Ōtepoti Dunedin.
This role runs from two weeks prior to semester one teaching through to two weeks after semester two ends typically mid-February until late October. Within this period hours of work are typically Monday-Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm however as labs can run from 8:00am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday hours of work will require some flexibility.
The salary level for this position is provisionally evaluated as Level 4 ($63508 to $68185 per annum top of the range is $73640.) and is subject to change.
