We are seeking a Classroom Teaching Assistant with British Sign Language L2.

Copleston High School is a popular 11-18 mixed comprehensive noted for its caring and disciplined atmosphere.

The role of the specialist teaching assistant (TA) is to support the development communication learning and achievement of deaf children or young people. You will need experience of working with children to support and manage learning and ideally some experience of the needs of deaf learners. You will need a sign language qualification of BSL Level two.

You will:

  • have good communication skills

  • be able to build effective working relationships with children and staff

  • be deaf aware.

What is expected in the role:

  • facilitating access to learning in the mainstream through supporting communication and understanding. This may be through spoken language British Sign Language (BSL) or a combination of both

  • promoting deaf awareness social inclusion and understanding

  • delivering interventions

  • modelling strategies and support to school staff

  • following the advice of professionals to ensure a coherent approach to support

  • working collaboratively with colleagues

  • meeting with the teacher of the deaf to plan and monitor support

  • keeping accurate records as directed by staff

  • forming effective working relationships with staff and families.

The work will involve supporting individual students and groups of students. You must be motivated patient and highly organised. GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent) in both Mathematics and English is essential due to the role including Mathematics and Numeracy intervention.

You will have high standards and be committed to meeting the needs of the school and the wider community. The school has a strongly supportive ethos and is deeply committed to the professional development of staff. We offer an excellent induction programme to all colleagues who join us.
