Job Summary
The Free Press is one of the fastest growing media organizations in the world serving subscribers with original reporting and sense-making that theyve come to love and trust. Illuminating overlooked and nuanced concepts in American economic life is a key next priority for The Free Press and we seek to hire a new colleague with deep editorial experience a taste for challenging conventional narratives and a hunger to build a thriving community of in-real-life readers.
Our readers are hungry for understanding everything from tariffs to the impact of AI but are also eager to understand the debate of Bitcoin vs. gold or the role of Wall Street in our current economy.
This person should have an insatiable appetite for understanding the U.S. economy top-to-bottom whether at the Fed on the individual level of companies or workers. This person should be able to either write or assign pieces podcasts and videos that capture the distinctive approach of The Free Press which is to steer clear of commodity news and find the stories and hidden truths of whats happening and why.
We do things differently at The Free Press and building a community is a key part of this role. We seek a person who can also cultivate readers organize them for in-person events and give them space IRL or online to connect with each other.
This person should have at least 7 years experience in business journalism or a related field. Ideally this person will also be connected to contributors from whom The Free Press can commission pieces. Above all this person must be devoted to our underlying mission and our is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build atop the high-growth engine of The Free Press and to find audiences that crave new insights.
Responsibilities
- Devise and oversee The Free Presss business coverage.
- Source commission and edit contributions from freelance writers subject-matter experts and opinion leaders.
- Shape pitches into strong clear and original stories aligned with The Free Presss editorial standards.
- Work with staff writers on investigations features columns relating to business and tech.
- Work across departments to improve our business coverage not just in written stories but podcasts livestreams and more.
- Collaborate with design audience and production teams to maximize reach and impact.
Qualifications
- 7 years of experience as an editor in journalism publishing or related fields.
- Demonstrated skill in editing business and economics pieces including investigations op-eds essays or reported features.
- A strong editorial voice with the ability to sharpen arguments and elevate prose.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to juggle multiple projects at once.
- Familiarity with the current media and cultural landscape with an eye for stories that break through.
- A track record of working with a wide range of writers from seasoned journalists to emerging voices.
- Passion for The Free Presss mission and curiosity about ideas across the political and cultural spectrum.
$180000 - $230000 a year
Location: New York NY (in office; remote US considered for exceptional candidates)
