Work Arrangements: Due to the nature of the work and operational requirements this position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement (combination of working onsite and telework). Employees in this position who telework will be required to travel to the identified work site at least three times per week or a minimum of 60% of their regular work schedule at their own expense.

The Role

We are looking for an early to mid-career Research Officer (RO) Modular and Offsite Construction (MOC) Demonstration Housing Projects to support our Construction Research Centre. The Research Officer would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity Excellence Respect and Creativity.

The NRCs Construction Research Centre is implementing the Platform to Decarbonize the Construction Sector at Scale a flagship initiative to drive transformation in construction productivity decarbonization and digitalization. The platform includes large-scale demonstration projects that integrate novel building technologies construction methods and performance-driven solutions.

This RO will contribute research expertise in performance monitoring construction productivity and decarbonization solutions to help design implement and evaluate demonstration projects that accelerate innovation adoption across Canadas construction sector.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

A PhD in Construction Engineering Construction Management Building and Architectural Engineering Civil Engineering or Industrial Engineering.

A PhD in a related field combined with significant experience in construction methods field performance evaluation or productivity analysis as well as applied research and construction project experience may also be considered.

A Masters degree in Construction Engineering Building and Architectural Engineering Civil Engineering Industrial Engineering or a related engineering discipline with a focus on construction methods field performance evaluation or productivity analysis combined with significant experience in construction projects and applied research may also be considered.

Experience

  • Experience in planning executing and evaluating modular and off-site construction approaches for the housing sector.

  • Experience designing and executing applied research projects in construction management particularly involving field demonstrations pilot testing or technology deployment.

  • Experience developing validating and deploying key performance indicators (KPI) relevant to stakeholders and clients on construction management projects.

  • Experience working with diverse stakeholders both internal and external (e.g. general contractors suppliers housing providers researchers procurement contracts management municipalities) in collaborative research or demonstration contexts.


The following may be considered as assets:

    • Experience in construction automation (e.g. automated data acquisition automated collision avoidance automated manufacturing technologies and processes.

    • Experience with construction data acquisition digital tools (e.g. BIM VDC) or post-occupancy evaluation.

    • Experience supporting large-scale construction projects through research evaluation frameworks KPI implementation and analysis bench marking and cost-benefit analysis.

For a Reliability Status verification of background information over a period of 5 years is required.

Assessment Criteria

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies

  • Knowledge of innovative construction technologies and approaches including modular/off-site construction energy-efficient retrofits and low-carbon materials.

  • Knowledge of applying productivity metrics in construction settings including pre/post analysis (eg. Schedule quality sustainability safety cost etc.)

  • Demonstrated ability to translate research findings into accessible applied outputs (e.g. technical reports stakeholder briefings guidelines) combined with knowledge in project planning data collection cost and performance comparison studies and stakeholder reporting.


The following may be considered as assets:

    • Demonstrated knowledge of modular and off-site construction methods for housing including adaptive reuse of existing buildings for residential purposes.

    • Strong knowledge of construction related field research practices including planning monitoring and evaluation of construction projects.

    • Knowledge of BIM and its application in project planning monitoring costing and performance evaluation within construction and demonstration environments.

Compensation

The intent of this hiring action is to staff this position at theAsRO-AcRO level which is an early to mid-career level position with a salary range of $83985 to $139608.

NOTE: Please note that the full RO/RCO salary scale has five levels. Salary determination will be based on a review of the candidates expertise outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the such the initial salary could be within another level of the RO/RCO salary scale (i.e. above or below the intended level for this position).
