Program Overview:
Our Athletics & Community Enrichment Services Department at Henry Street Settlement is rooted in the principles of Sports-Based Youth Development (SBYD) where athletics serve as a powerful tool for building confidence resilience leadership and lifelong healthy habits. Our programs go beyond competition; we provide young people with safe inclusive and supportive spaces to grow on and off the playing surfaces. Through basketball flag football tennis soccer and baseball participants develop critical social and emotional skills strengthen their academic engagement and learn the values of teamwork perseverance and community responsibility. Our coaches are not only athletic leaders but also mentors who help youth navigate challenges celebrate successes and realize their full potential.
Job Summary:
Are you passionate about shaping the next generation of sports stars As an Athletics Coach you will have the incredible opportunity to guide and mentor young student-athletes. Your focus will be on their skill development educational support and overall personal growth. You will play a vital role in empowering young people to excel in their chosen sports hobbies and interests while providing valuable guidance and educational support to help them achieve peak performance both on the court and in the classroom.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED required; Associates degree or higher in Physical Education Sports Management Youth Development or related field preferred
- Demonstrated experience coaching organized teams in basketball and other sports (e.g. flag football soccer tennis) with a focus on youth development and positive coaching practices.
- Excellent conflict resolution and prevention skills including restorative conflict management techniques
- Excellent motivational and team-building skills to foster resilience perseverance and self-confidence in youth
- Professional flexible and team-oriented with a growth mindset
- Experience in fitness training skill-building and leadership development through sports
- Ability to model and teach good sportsmanship while holding participants accountable to team standards
- Ability to engage participants from diverse academic cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds including those who face barriers to success
- Familiarity with strength-based and youth-centered approaches that emphasize personal growth goal-setting and holistic development
Responsibilities
- Coach after-school evening and weekend athletics with a youth development focus that prioritizes skill development teamwork and character growth over winning alone.
- Set and communicate clear expectations for behavior participation and academic accountability.
- Design and implement team-building practices that integrate SEL competencies (self-management responsible decision-making relationship skills) into athletic activities.
- Manage and structure athletic activities to create a safe supportive and inclusive team culture.
- Monitor participants academic progress and collaborate with educational staff to ensure youth receive tutoring and counseling support.
- Organize distribute and ensure the security of athletic equipment and uniforms.
- Notify supervisor of equipment needs and resource gaps promptly.
- Facilitate game-day operations including setup and breakdown.
- Identify and refer youth who may require additional behavioral emotional or academic support to program leadership and supervisors.
- Provide crisis intervention when necessary using trauma-informed and de-escalation strategies.
- Collaborate with fellow coaches and athletics administration to ensure consistency and quality in program delivery.
- Uphold program and department policies while modeling equity inclusion and cultural humility.
- Perform additional related duties/projects as assigned by the supervisor.
Essential Physical Job Functions:
- Able to lift/pull 50 pounds (supplies and equipment)
- Ability to work onsite in the Lower East Side
