Range Explanation:

The Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner has an opening for a Morgue Assistant. This position participates in maintaining the decedent inventory and operations of the department. Responsibilities include receiving and releasing decedents as well as performing other morgue-related duties and assisting in preparing decedents for examinations by completing inventories fingerprinting photographing and entering data. During examinations morgue assistants are responsible for transporting cases to the examination area at their scheduled times and returning them to the cooler upon completion.

Essential Functions:

As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act this classification may include any of the following tasks knowledge skills and other characteristics. Work assignments may vary depending on the departments needs and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.

  • Initiates and prepares identification band associated paperwork and logs decedent information into the Office of the Medical Examiner database;

  • Performs body/clothing inspection for personal property documentation upon arrival of decedent at the Office of the Medical Examiner;

  • Secures personal property of deceased and ensures release to proper designee;

  • Coordinates the release of remains to funeral homes and public fiduciary offices;

  • Fingerprints and photographs of decedents;

  • Maintains cooler inventory;

  • Treats deceased remains with care and in a professional manner and maintains required security and confidentiality of information created or encountered in the course of assigned duties;

  • Inventories supplies keeps records and files and performs other routine clerical duties;

  • Maintains County vehicles and trailers;

  • Cleans organizes and re-stocks the receiving area and coolers;

  • Performs eyewash station maintenance;

  • Operates equipment such as forklifts and gurneys;

  • Maintains sanitary conditions of the facility equipment and instruments and ensures safe disposal of biological and biohazardous materials.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or General Education Development (G.E.D.) certificate AND six months of experience in a medical/hospital medical examiners office funeral home setting or closely related field as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.

OR:

Nine semester credits from an accredited college or university or technical school in courses that focus on criminal justice mortuary science biology anatomy or physiology.

  • Minimum one (1) year experience in a funeral home medical examiners office or hospital setting.

Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Licenses and Certificates:Valid driver license is required at time of application.ValidAZdriver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicants suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services review and approval of the candidates driving record. Some positions require a valid Arizona Class D driver license at time of application or prior to completion of an initial or promotional probation period. Failure to obtain/maintain the required certification/licensures shall be grounds for termination.

Special Notice Items: The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history education and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. Some positions may carry the risk of exposure to infectious diseases asbestos or wastewater products; therefore special medical screening prior to or during employment may be necessary to assure employee health and safety.

Physical/Sensory Requirements: The ability to independently move and manipulate heavy objects of up to a minimum of 100 pounds. Other physical/sensory work requirements will be determined by position.
