Position Title: Alternate Education Special Education Teacher

Pay Grade: Certified Instructional Scale Period of Employment: 10 months

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Program Administrator

General Responsibilities: To aid each student consistent with his or her abilities and educational needs to: 1. plan and provide appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities in alternative settings 2. provide and/or monitor specialized instruction to students with disabilities; 3. ensure students participate in the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible when supported with accommodations and other supplemental aids; 4. develops and implements effective instructional practices based on the needs identified in students Individualized Education Plans (IEPs); 5. implements and monitors the students Individualized Education Plans in collaboration with parents and other IEP Team members

Essential Duties:

  • Plans curriculum develops individualized lesson plans and prepares instructional materials that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of assigned students considering the Virginia Standards of Learning local requirements and physical emotional and academic levels of development.
  • Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive environment in accordance with the IEP.
  • Develops and implements a variety of effective teaching strategies and techniques; i.e. hands-on student interaction lecture group work etc. to present instructional content to the students.
  • Plans integrates and utilizes technology for classroom instruction.
  • Utilizes assistive technology and specialized equipment.
  • Provides feedback to students on learning activities.
  • Develops and implements a plan for managing classroom behaviors in accordance with the IEP using a variety of positive behavioral supports.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of Behavioral Intervention Plans using the Functional Behavior Assessment process.
  • Participates in staff department content learning teams and special education committee meetings as required.
  • Maintains a system of record keeping and data collection towards students IEP goals and objectives.
  • Compiles and maintains special education components of Student Education Record.
  • Participates in specialized staff development activities to improve job related skills and apply best practices in working with students with disabilities.
  • Collaborates in a co-teaching situation with a general education classroom teacher to assess program effectiveness recommend instructional strategies ensure implementation of students required accommodations and/or modifications provide curriculum coordination between general and special education and evaluate the students educational progress.
  • Consults with the general education teacher regarding instructional and behavioral strategies for assigned students in general education.
  • Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction.
  • Informs general education teachers of accommodations and modifications required by the students IEPs.
  • Respond to parent inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Perform duties deemed necessary by the School Board and Superintendent for the efficient and successful operation of the school system.
  • Comply with all school laws State Board of Education regulations and all rules and regulations made by the School Board and Superintendent.
  • Attend all meetings called or approved by the Superintendent Principal or Supervising Officer.
  • Learn the criteria for the evaluation of the Teacher; especially the areas of evaluation procedures evaluation steps and appeals.
  • Maintains training and certifications such as CPR Handle With Care and any specific training related to the needs of the student(s).
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Building Principal.



Requisite Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to design lessons that teach curriculum in an engaging manner applying various teaching methods such as discussions demonstration and individual or collaborative projects and research.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills to manage and control the classroom.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-stress situations.
  • Creative analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology.



Requisite Education and Experience:

  • Must possess good moral character.
  • Must possess at a minimum a bachelors degree.
  • Must have met the Virginia Department of Education requirements to possess a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in the area for which he/she is being hired to teach.
  • Experience in computer technology preferred or desirable and/or willing to pursue appropriate technology training as required by position.
  • Experience working in an Alternative setting.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see read talk hear handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as but not limited to: a personal computer calculator copier and fax machine. Some climbing stooping kneeling crouching reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting grasping or repetitive motions required.
