Job Description

Primary Purpose

Teach assigned courses in horticulture greenhouse and small farm management integrated pest management etc.

Description of Essential Functions

Teaching (90% of Time)

  1. Collaborate with the lead Agroecology Faculty member to ensure the student experience is aligned with instructional methodology appropriate to the audience.
  2. Teach assigned courses as needed and in-line with qualifications. Specific courses may include Horticulture Science (nursery and small farm management). Integrated Pest Management and Plant Ecology.
  3. Use instructional methodology appropriate to the audience and to the student (e.g. lecture demonstration group discussion technology-enhanced delivery computer-assisted delivery and distance delivery). Must be able to explain and deliver materials in a variety of ways to meet the needs of a broad range of learning activities.
  4. Evaluate students in accordance with the criteria in the course outline and other applicable college policies and procedures. Is responsible for turning in grades according to college policy and procedure.
  5. Create a course syllabus for each course taught which includes but is not limited to course outcomes course structure materials to be covered grading criteria due dates for materials exam dates and office hours.
General Duties (10% of Time)
  1. Work effectively with colleagues and students of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds demonstrating an ability to work with others in a courteous and cooperative fashion.
  2. Ensure compliance with all Southwestern Oregon Community College rules regulations and policies.
  3. Demonstrate continued professional growth by staying current in and expanding knowledge of teaching techniques.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated expertise and/or two (2) years teaching horticulture pest management and plant ecology.

  • Working knowledge of horticulture agriculture and maintenance tools equipment and safety protocols.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire students.
  • AbilitytoeffectivelycommunicateinEnglishwithothersbothorallyandinwrittenform which includes the ability to restate at various language levels to simplify and to use demonstrations which relate to previous knowledge and concrete experience.
  • Ability to use instructional delivery methods which reflect an adult orientation.
  • Abilitytoworkcooperativelywithdepartmentmembersandmembersofthecollege community in meetings and on projects.
  • Abilitytoreviewunderstandapplyandshareconceptspresentedintraining programs conferences and/or professional literature.
  • Willingness to assist in labs at various hours as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
A Master Gardener or experienced horticulturalist preferred.
Experience: Gardening horticulture greenhouse or integrated farming experience preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR LICENSES
Must reside in the State of Oregon. Southwestern Oregon Community College is unable to support out of state employment at this time.

Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization US Department of Education as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.
