Job Description

This position is for the 2025-26 Winter Sports Season

GROUP:Atheltics

SALARY:Stipend

FLSA STATUS:Non-Exempt

SUMMARY: The Assistant HS Boys Basketball Coach assists in providing leadership and direction to the high school girls basketball team as coordinated with the teams head coach. The assistant coach enforces all rules of the WIAA as they relate to the respective sport and assists with the organization and administration of the team.

ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLS: Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in the state of Washington and one of approximately 200 tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools to be funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Implements and enforces all decisions and directives of the head coach
  • Assists the head coach with planning and conducting all practice sessions consistent with the plan of implementation
  • Maintains a current and accurate squad roster at all times being sure that it is on file with the head coach
  • Supports the head coach in conducting the athletic program for the girls basketball team and the total athletic program of Chief Leschi Schools; contributes to and supports team strategies as outlined by the head coach
  • Demonstrates loyalty to the head coach and the team
  • Attends team staff meetings as directed by the head coach Athletic Director or building principal
  • Assumes any assigned duties by the head coach pertaining to the team including conducting portions of practice drills handling equipment determining eligibility working with student managers scouting handling public relations and keeping statistics
  • In the absence of the head coach assumes all responsibilities designated as those of the head coach
  • Reports any injuries to the head coach and/or Athletic Director
  • Assists with the inspection of all equipment oversees the issuance and collection of equipment and maintains equipment inventory records; advises the head coach who is responsible for all equipment of any equipment that needs repair or certification
  • Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Be at least 18 years old

Possess a high school diploma or GED

Hold a valid and current First Aid Certification card or be enrolled in a Red Cross First Aid card training course

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Associates degree from an accredited college with major coursework in physical education coaching or related field or

At least three (3) years of direct work experience as a coach of a major sports team (Alternative combinations of education and experience will be evaluated by People & Talent Management for comparability.)

Experience in coaching a diverse student population

Current employee of Chief Leschi Schools preferably a certificated employee

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

Able to maintain a successful criminal background clearance

Successful and/or clear drug screening

KNOWLEDGE OF:

School board policies and procedures

Skills involved in sport of girls basketball

WIAA interscholastic activities policies and coaching standards

ABILITY TO:

Take initiative and work independently

Communicate effectively verbally and in writing

Maintain effective working relationships with individuals and groups in a multicultural and diverse community

Work collaboratively with school and central office administrators parents and community members

Demonstrate understanding of and experience with cultural competence

Comply with school board policies and follow administrative procedures

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:Head Coach or designee

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand or sit or both for long periods of time. The employee must frequently reach with hands and arms and is regularly required to talk or hear; stand and/or walk; bend stoop twist squat and kneel; and use hands to finger handle feel and perform fine motor manipulation. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Anything over the weight limits should be done as a two-person lift or with a mechanical lift.
