Backend Engineer Ranking and Retrieval (All Genders)

ABOUT THE TEAM

As a Backend Engineer in the Search and Browse Discovery team you will be delivering a direct impact to more than 50 million Zalando customers in 25 countries and growing. You will take the Ranking and Retrieval systems to the next level currently we have around 15M searchable articles in our Elasticsearch (around 600 nodes with 150 indexes) and everything including Elasticsearch is hosted on Kubernetes

WHERE YOUR EXPERTISE IS NEEDED

• Be a part of an agile experienced backend engineering team to developing the Retrieval and Ranking systems

• Designbuild and maintain scalable backend technologies such as Scala Java Elasticsearch Nakadi and Kubernetes systems that enhance personalized search and browse experiences.

• Ensure a state-of-the-art software development methodology

• Optimize search ranking and recommendation logic through backend engineering.

• Write and review solution designs for complex backend challenges.

• Drive operational excellence ensuring system performance reliability and maintainability.

• Share your knowledge with your colleagues helping them to grow their technical skills

• Interact with various teams and stakeholders with different backgrounds and with a large spectrum of competencies

WHAT WERE LOOKING FOR

• Ability to design large-scale resilient distributed microservices on a cloud infrastructure (preferably Kubernetes and AWS)

• Experience with REST APIs design and event-driven architectures

• Experience with scaling a large-scale Database system (SQL or no-SQL)

• Experience with JVM-based languages (Java Kotlin Scala) experience with Scala is a plus

• Advocating for agile processes operational excellence and coding best practices such as clean code readability and test-driven development
