Purpose of Job
The purpose of this job is to analyze review and interpret building codes and ordinances ensuring their application in the field and reviewing and approving permit applications for all construction for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to supervising staff analyzing interpreting and reviewing codes reviewing inspections reviewing plans issuing citations maintaining files and performing additional tasks as assigned.

Must work cooperatively with others.
When requirements include vehicle operation responsible for the safety readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACCs safe driving policy.Minimum Training & Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Bachelors Degree in Construction Architecture Engineering Communication or Education or related field; with five years of experience as an Inspector in the construction field required; or any equivalent combination of education training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge skills and abilities for this job.
Must possess the International Code Council (ICC) Certification as a Building Electrical Mechanical or Plumbing Plans Examiner.
Must possess ICC Certification as a Building Electrical Mechanical or Plumbing Code Official.
Must possess GA State soil and Water Conservation Commission - Level 1B Certification in Soil Erosion in Sedimentation Control (SESC).
Two years of supervisory experience is required.
Must possess a valid drivers license.
Essential Duties Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
May supervise and evaluate staff handling all employee concerns directing work assignments counseling and disciplining employees when necessary and completing employee performance appraisals.
Trains and directs employees in the use and interpretation of state and local building codes and local ordinances related to commercial industrial institutional and residential development and construction; reviews inspections performed by other employees; serves as first level of appeal.
Analyzes interprets and reviews existing and proposed codes for staff and construction industry use.
Responds to telephone inquiries from citizens builders contractors and public utilities related to code interpretation and enforcement; investigates and addresses citizen concerns and complaints.
Reviews plans to be presented to the weekly meetings of the Athens-Clarke County Plan Review Committee.
Notifies contractor subcontractor engineer architect or homeowner of code violations and discusses possible options to correct violations.
Issues citations for code violations; prepares and serves summons and provides testimony at appeal hearings and in court.
Maintains files of inspections re-inspections inspector notes and required reports.
Inspects ongoing building construction and repairs or modifications for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances; inspects existing structures for violations of safety or sanitation regulations or when adopted codes and ordinances require an inspection.
Completes various administrative reports.
Participates in professional development activities.
Consults with architects engineers developers builders and others to explain the Athens-Clarke County plan review process.
Assists with preparation of the division budget and overall department budget.
Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge of the principles practices and procedures of the Athens-Clarke County Government and the operations and functions of the Building Inspections Department.
