Job Description

The Oliva & Fernandez-Ruiz labs employ a multi-disciplinary approach including the development and application of cutting-edge experimental and computational techniques to understand the neural mechanisms that support learning and memory. We use large-scale electrophysiology and imaging to record hundreds to thousands of neurons across multiple brain areas in behaving rodents. To test the role of specific cell types and brain patterns we perform closed-loop optogenetic manipulations of neural activity allowing refinement and updating of the theories guiding experiment. Overall our research aims to understand the neural circuit mechanisms of cognitive functions in health and disease. With this purpose we develop and deploy novel technologies for the study of neural function.

The Lab Technician will provide lab support for designing and building neural interfaces and embedded electronics for recording brain activity in rodents. This involves helping design PCBs micro fabrication work in the clean room soldering circuits helping with micro fabrication of circuits and integration of all parts into devices that can be used for neural recordings. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Building analog and digital integrated electrical circuits and PCB boards
  • Clean room micro fabrication of electrodes and PCBs
  • Soldering circuits for newly designed PCBs
  • Digital signal processing and basic or routine computer programming (Matlab Labview Python)
  • Laboratory workshop maintenance and reordering of basic supplies
  • Adhere to lab safety protocols with a solid understanding of laboratory safety techniques and procedures.

The Lab Technician will also have opportunities to participate in the intellectual environment of the lab and the department.

Required Qualifications:

Associates Degree. Relevant work experience up to 2 years in electronics circuit design and/or micro fabrication or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must be motivated organized hardworking and an enthusiastic contributor. Must be personable and able to develop strong working relationships with a variety of people. Must be flexible be able to multi-task possess excellent organizational and communication skills and take pride in providing exceptional service while working in a team-oriented environment. Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students faculty staff and community members.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelors degree in physics or engineering coupled with an interest in neuroscience.

This is a full-time (39 hours per week) 12-month term appointment with the possibility of extension contingent on successful performance and continued funding.
