Whats the role

The Lawyer/ Senior Lawyer will support the specialist team managing the strategic third-party insurance arrangements and will provide trusted advice to the Bank to help its customers with their insurance needs. The lawyer will report into and work closely with the legal teams supporting consumer credit banking products and digital and retail banking distribution channels.

In this role you will develop a deep understanding of the Westpac Groups insurance strategy and partnerships while providing strategic legal advice aligned with business governance and objectives. You will proactively identify legal and commercial risks offer innovative solutions and manage external legal resources to ensure advice is commercially focused and effectively implemented. As a trusted advisor you will be across regulatory and industry developments and help shape our responses to emerging issues. This is a dynamic opportunity to partner closely with business leaders influence outcomes and contribute to the success of becoming our customers #1 banking partner for life.

What do I need

  • 7 years PQE Private Practice and/or inhouse roles
  • Understanding of general and life insurance products and experience advising on insurance distribution and referral arrangements
  • Financial services law (Corporations Act including Design and Distribution Obligations) and Insurance Contracts Act expertise
  • Experience with ASIC/APRA regulatory frameworks and responding to regulatory notices and/or submissions on distribution related matters (desirable)
  • Knowledge of the respective banking and insurance codes of practice and other regulation (desirable)
  • Ability to provide clear practical legal advice tailored to cross functional internal stakeholders and external partners
  • Experience with marketing reviews and promotion of insurance products (desirable)
  • Skilled in reviewing and advising on commercial contracts (desirable)
