Empirical Evaluation of Wireless Connectivity in Essitys IoT Systems: Towards Enhanced Reliability and Efficiency
At Essity we have IoT solutions on the market for the last 12 years we have gone through several technology shifts but one challenge is still the same how do we optimize our IoT solutions for indoor use the radio challenges are still the same no matter what technology we use. We are constantly working to improve our solutions. We are looking for fresh perspectives on this challenge.
Are you a student eager to apply your theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges We believe that innovation thrives on new ideas and your master thesis project could be the spark that drives our next breakthrough.
You will dig deep into our different IoT solutions applying your theoretical knowledge to analyze our existing solutions in their right element and look for improvements. How do we know if our solution will work in a new location do we have the optimal antenna design are we using the best technology for our use cases
Our solutions have been on the market for a long time and we have been doing incremental improvements and learned a lot but the radio part remains a challenge.
Do analysis with focus on Essitys use-cases technical evaluations of different IoT technologies applicable for our various use-cases.
You need to be structured analytic have a good understanding of various wireless connectivity technologies like LTE-M NB-IoT 4G 5G Wi-Fi LoRa etc.
How to evaluate a site indoor from a radio perspective before and during production. Can we lower the installation costs by shorten the installation time First time right How to monitor the radio environment over time. Can we build our own Indoor coverage map (we have a lot of old data) Can we rebuild one of our devices to use as a site planning tool instead of buying a product on the market we believe it is an advantage to use our own antenna and modem.
Number of students: preferably 2
Relevant academic background: Master program within Electrical Engineering or equivalent with good knowledge about different wireless communication technologies.
Desired skills or interests: Smart Buildings deep knowledge/interest in radio physics. You are aiming for a future in MedTech or IoT. You are aiming to become a technical specialist with a sense of details.
Meriting experiences or knowledge areas: Experience from professional care och professional cleaning is a great plus.
This master thesis project will require close collaboration with our team and regular presence at our office in Gothenburg. Therefore we are looking for students who are either based in the Gothenburg area or are able to arrange accommodation locally for the duration of the project.

This master thesis will be hosted by Hardware Center of Excellence HWCoE is a unit in Essity IT. We support our brands Tena and Tork with expert knowledge in hardware design & development software development (firmware) and wireless connectivity.
