About the Office of Commissioner Rodney Ellis

There are four precincts in Harris County. The four elected commissioners along with an elected county judge serve as members of Harris County Commissioners Court the administrative head of the countys government. Commissioner Rodney Ellis represents the constituents of Precinct One.

With approximately 1.17 million residents Harris County Precinct One is a diverse urban precinct that covers 363 square miles. Precinct Ones multi-racial multi-ethnic population is roughly 33 percent African American 38 percent Latino 21 percent Anglo 6 percent Asian and 2 percent other or multiple races.Precinct One stretches south to Brazoria County and reaches into eastern and northern sections of Harris County. The Precincts territory includes a large section of Downtown Houston including the Downtown Harris County Courthouse Complex Toyota Center Minute Maid Park and the BBVA Compass Stadium. Other notable landmarks include the 263-acre NRG Park Complex and the renowned Texas Medical Center. The Precinct is also the higher educational home to Houston Community College Rice University Texas Southern University the University of Houston and the University of St. Thomas. Precinct One manages more than 21 parks 10 community centers numerous hike-and-bike trails three maintenance service centers and several area offices all of which provide an array of services to Precinct One residents.

Role and Goal of Communications Division in Our Organization:

The Communications Division of Comm Ellis office develops and implements innovative and effective communications strategies and diverse content to advance our organizational mission.

What you will do at Precinct One:

The Office of Commissioner Rodney Ellis (OCRE) seeks a motivated detail-oriented Communications Coordinator to support the day-to-day operations of a fast-paced communications team. This entry-level position is ideal for a strong writer who can adapt to different formats juggle multiple priorities and thrive under deadlines.

The Communications Coordinator will play a utility roledrafting ceremonial documents posting updates to the OCRE newsroom managing social media content preparing email blasts to community stakeholders and supporting the teams broader content needs. At the same time this role offers opportunities for growth in communications strategy digital content creation and outreach to media and community partners to help amplify OCREs voice. The ideal candidate is eager to learn ready to pitch in wherever needed and committed to the values of equity justice and fairness that guide OCREs work.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Content creation: Draft and format ceremonial resolutions social media posts (5-7 posts daily across platforms) monthly email newsletters website/newsroom updates and other communications materials.
  • Publishing & distribution: Post approved content to OCREs website newsroom social media channels and email listserv.
  • Editing & support: Proofread and edit documents for clarity accuracy and alignment with OCREs voice and values.
  • Project support: Assist the Communications Director other communications leadership and fellow team members with deadlines scheduling and coordination of communications deliverables. Manage communications calendar and project management tool.
  • Rapid response: Monitor news and policy developments. Assist with drafting timely content (within hours of breaking news) for social media email or the newsroom.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with colleagues in Communications Policy and Community Affairs & Advocacy (CAA) to ensure consistency in messaging.
  • Event support: Provide communications and logistics support at community events press conferences and Commissioners Court sessions including live posting. These duties include evenings and weekends when necessary.
  • Professional development: Build skills in strategic communications media and community partner outreach and digital engagement with guidance and mentorship from senior team members.

Requirements

Education

  • Bachelors degree in Communications Public Relations English Political Science Public Policy or a related field of study from an accredited college or university


Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong writing editing and proofreading skills with an ability to adapt tone and format for different platforms.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms email publishing tools and basic website content management.
  • Excellent organizational skills attention to detail and the ability to maintain focus while managing multiple priorities.
  • Proven work ethic and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to equity justice and the values of the Office of Commissioner Rodney Ellis.
  • Demonstrated interest in public-sector or civic storytelling; Harris County/local government familiarity.

Preferences

Experience:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of professional experience in communications journalism public affairs or related fields (internship or campus experience accepted) (preferred)

  • Some evenings and weekends may be required

  • Will generally perform duties in an office though sometimes at external event locations
