Job Summary

Position Function:

The Database Manager is responsible for overseeing the maintenance and daily operation of the Mississippi Repository for Missing and Unidentified Persons database and website. This position ensures data integrity supports collaboration with law enforcement families and community stakeholders and manages the technical infrastructure needed to maintain a secure accessible and accurate statewide resource.

Department Profile:

The Cobb Institute of Archaeology is a research and service unit of the College of Arts & Sciences of Mississippi State University.
It was founded in 1971 to promote archaeological research and education at Mississippi State University related to the Middle Eastern origins of Western Civilization and to the Indians of the South particularly in Mississippi.
The Institutes facilities house the Lois Dowdle Cobb Museum of Archaeology and its artifact collections. The Institute also manages a separate facility for the curation of research collections.
The Institutes staff hold formal cross-affiliations with the Department of Anthropology and Middle Eastern Cultures where they serve as teaching faculty.
Staff archaeologists are involved in a full range of archaeological research including basic cultural and historical investigations field excavations laboratory analysis and report preparation as well as cultural resource management and public archaeology. The Institute works with businesses municipalities state federal and international agencies to assist them in complying with antiquities regulations and with cultural resource and environmental laws.
Through affiliations with academic departments the Institute provides a wide range of opportunities for MSU undergraduate and graduate students to become engaged in archaeological research and study activities. The Institute also provides assistantships to students concentrating in archaeology in the Masters Program in Applied Anthropology of the Department of Anthropology and Middle Eastern Cultures.
The annual program of the Institute features public lectures tours and workshops and the staff is routinely engaged in on-and off-campus outreach activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Administer and maintain the repository database including data entry quality control and updates.
Coordinate with law enforcement agencies medical examiners coroners and families to collect and verify case information.
Develop and implement data management policies to ensure consistency accuracy and security.
Train and support users (law enforcement MSU staff researchers) in accessing and inputting case information.
Work with repository leadership to expand database functionality and public-facing tools.
Assist in producing reports data summaries and outreach materials for public research and casework use.
Collaborate with MSU faculty graduate students and external partners (i.e. Department of Public Safety) to support forensic casework analysis and research initiatives.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in Anthropology Criminology or related field.
Demonstrated experience with database management data integrity and recordkeeping.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders including law enforcement and families.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Experience with missing/unidentified persons data or case management systems.
Familiarity with FileMaker Pro and Drupal software.
Knowledge of the medicolegal field including protocols for sampling DNA.
Knowledge of forensic anthropology casework and criminal justice processes.
Experience in public outreach or interagency coordination.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Work is primarily performed in an office and computer lab setting but some outdoor fieldwork may occur.
Travel will be required for casework training and outreach.
Some evening or weekend work may be necessary to meet deadlines.
