Position Overview:

SDOTs Transportation Operations Division is seeking a seasoned and visionary professional to join its Vision Zero team as the Senior Vision Zero Engineer (City classification: Senior Civil Engineer). This is a high-impact opportunity for an experienced civil engineer to lead the development of priority safety corridor projects that address holistic transportation needs and reflect citywide objectives modal plans right-of-way allocation priorities and robust public engagement. The successful candidate will be responsible for crafting comprehensive scopes schedules budgets and preliminary designs that advance Seattles commitment to safe equitable this role the engineer will analyze high-collision locations identify crash trends and develop targeted safety improvement strategies. They will also spearhead the deployment of Safe Systems countermeasures citywide contribute to policy development that supports a Safe Systems approach and integrate the principles of Seattles Transportation Equity Framework into all aspects of project delivery. Reporting to the Vision Zero Engineering Supervisor this position offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of transportation safety in Seattle and play a central role in achieving the citys Vision Zero goals.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develops preliminary designs of priority safety corridors based on safe systems principles and in accordance with citywide and departmental modal plans priorities and objectives.
  • Prepares plans budgets schedules and preliminary designs of the most complex controversial and/or highly visible priority safety corridors and high crash locations.
  • Manages and coordinates with internal and external stakeholders the public and elected officials on highly visible controversial and complex priority safety corridor projects.
  • Plans and develops communications to explain project objectives and answer questions from the public media and other agencies.
  • Helps administer projects supported by various grants. Coordinates consultant selection process; prepares negotiates and administers consultant agreements.
  • Prepares and delivers presentations to internal and external stakeholders to convey project and program goals structure policy schedule and budget and other relevant content.
  • Coordinates the preparation and review of multiple reports and studies including but not limited to public involvement plans alternatives analysis traffic analysis pavement design drainage memo scope of work project budget and schedule planning-level cost estimates and preliminary design plans.
  • Attends planning meetings determines objectives program plans and project scopes of priority safety corridors.
  • Supports the operations and analysis of automated traffic safety cameras including preparation of siting analyses annual reports and interdepartmental coordination.
  • Leads development and deployment of safe systems countermeasures citywide.
  • Analyze crash trends to support the development of policies to advance a safe systems approach and inform the Vision Zero Program.
  • Participate in division or department-wide efforts to address transportation capital development race and social justice regional planning growth management environmental and other issues.
  • Support departmental goals in promoting diversity racial equality and social justice.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Requires five (5) years of professional civil engineering experience and a bachelors degree in civil engineering or civil engineering technology; (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington.
  • Current Washington State drivers license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Though not requirements strong candidates will have some of the following experience or can describe comparable experience:


  • Excellent Traffic Engineering knowledge and experience.
  • Ability to conduct traffic engineering reviews and provide guidance.
  • Knowledge and experience with AutoCAD or other CAD software including Auto Turn.
  • Knowledge and experience with traffic modeling software such as Synchro/Sim Traffic VISSIM and SIDRA.
  • Knowledge and experience with ArcGIS.
  • Excellent record-keeping skills.
  • Excellent customer service experience; demonstrated reliability.
  • Flexible and able to prioritize needs in an environment with rapidly changing work conditions and priorities.
  • Experience working for a governmental organization.
  • Ability to effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base.

The full salary range for this position is $72.38 - $84.28 per hour.
